And I get it: telling someone you don\u2019t know something is hard, especially when you\u2019re trying to convince that person to give you money.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s why saying \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d is so powerful. In a world full of BS, the best way to stand out is to resemble an actual human being. Admitting you don\u2019t know something is the most human thing you can do.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_dont_know_everything_%E2%80%94_which_makes_sense\"><\/span>You don\u2019t know everything \u2014 which makes sense<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I used to build WordPress websites for local businesses in Boulder, Colorado, and I never impressed potential clients more than the times I admitted I didn\u2019t know the answer to a question. It caught people off guard, in the best way, because they were so used to people pretending or weaseling their way out of corners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d I\u2019d tell people. \u201cLet\u2019s see if we can figure it out together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then we would. If I wasn\u2019t sure what a setting did, I\u2019d experiment as the customer watched. If it was something that would require more research, I\u2019d commit to figuring it out. But first, and always, I\u2019d admit that I didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>I built multiple relationships using the words \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d because people knew I wasn\u2019t trying to hide anything. There\u2019s trust in that. And you know what? The clients this impressed were by far the best people to work with. They were, on the whole, more curious, kind, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly just the sort of people you want to work with on a project.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our_culture_values_confidence_%E2%80%94_it_should_value_competence\"><\/span>Our culture values confidence \u2014 it should value competence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I should clarify: I\u2019m not saying you should be proud of your ignorance. Far from it. I\u2019m saying that, when you don\u2019t know something, you should admit it. You can\u2019t learn something if you think you already know it.<\/p>\n<p>This is a hard thing to realize. If recent history has taught me anything, it\u2019s that American culture values confidence more than competence. Being loudly incorrect gets you on TV more often than being quietly curious, and it sadly seems like a quick path to success in business. There\u2019s every incentive to pretend you know everything, and doing so can easily become reflexive.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, respecting the \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d isn\u2019t universal. I asked my Zapier coworkers, and many of them told me that, in previous roles, they\u2019d been punished professionally for admitting they didn\u2019t know something. That\u2019s a shame. Those companies missed out on the best possible version of my coworkers \u2014 the version that admits they don\u2019t know something and tries to learn.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Just_admit_you_dont_know\"><\/span>Just admit you don\u2019t know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>None of this is to say that admitting you don\u2019t know something is easy. It isn\u2019t. My Zapier colleague Breetel Graves recently wrote a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/zapier.com\/blog\/friday-updates-at-work\/\">Friday update<\/a> on our internal blog that I can\u2019t stop thinking about. She outlined her internal monologue in the lead-up to asking a question:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Breetel:<\/strong> I\u2019m so dumb, I can\u2019t ask this question. I can\u2019t reveal how dumb I am!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Breetel:<\/strong> Ok, let\u2019s say you are that dumb. What will h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en if you reveal how dumb you are?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breetel:<\/strong> I\u2019ll get fired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Breetel:<\/strong> You probably won\u2019t be fired im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely. It\u2019ll take a bit. The local cheese shop is hiring. You love cheese.<\/p>\n<p>And then I asked the question.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is so human it hurts. I do the same thing: I wonder if admitting I don\u2019t know something will result in some sort of catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>But you know what?
