Today, we discuss James Gunn\u2019s comments about his upcoming DC movie, The Suicide Squad, and the Joker character.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>David Ayer\u2019s 2016 entry in the DC Extended Universe was unsuccessful, to say the least. The movie\u2019s action-packed trailer promised badass action sequences and interesting villains. But <em>Suicide Squad<\/em> delivered a convoluted story with too many characters and a boring interpretation of the Joker by <strong>Jared Leto<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>So, when Warner Bros. announced that <strong>James Gunn<\/strong> was directing a new interpretation of the same DC Comics IP, this time titled <em><strong>The Suicide Squad<\/strong><\/em>, it was met with skepticism. We\u2019d just got that story. What could Gunn do to make it better? <\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/14\/movies\/james-gunn-the-suicide-squad.html\">an interview with the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>, Gunn shares that he asked the studio what he was allowed to change from the first movie. They told him: anything. He didn\u2019t even need to bring back <strong>Margot Robbie<\/strong> as Harley Quinn, though they hoped he would.  <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-mostly-new-suicide-squad\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Mostly_New_Suicide_Squad\"><\/span>A Mostly New Suicide Squad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With the creative freedom that Warner Bros. allowed him for their second <em>Suicide Squad<\/em> movie in just five years, Gunn says:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cI wanted to create what I thought of as the Suicide Squad. For me to react to David\u2019s movie would make it the shadow of David\u2019s movie. I wanted it to be its own thing completely\u2026My mission statement was just to make the most fun film I could and not balk at anything. I knew I had a chance that very few filmmakers have ever had, which is to make a huge-budget film with no holds barred in terms of the plot, the effects, the sets. I felt a responsibility to take chances.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gunn was able to come up with new characters, remove characters, keep characters. Whatever he thought would make the movie work.\u00a0So added characters he did. He brought in a few ridiculous names from the comics to play up the standalone sequel\u2019s humor and over-the-top nature. <\/p>\n<p><em>The Suicide Squad<\/em> features returning badasses, including Robbie\u2019s Harley Quinn and\u00a0<strong>Jai Courtney<\/strong> as Captain Boomerang. And also newcomers such as Polka-Dot Man (<strong>David Dastmalchian<\/strong>), <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/the-suicide-squads-polka-dot-man-has-absolutely-horrifi-1847253133\">who is covered in glowing tumors<\/a>, King Shark (voiced by <strong>Sylvester Stallone<\/strong>), who is half-human, half-shark, and an evil alien starfish named Starro. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-the-joker-is-not-in-the-suicide-squad\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_Joker_is_not_in_The_Suicide_Squad\"><\/span>Why the Joker is not in The Suicide Squad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bringing in new characters into <em>The Suicide Squad <\/em>did require some cuts to other familiars, however. Including Leto\u2019s interpretation of the Joker and Will Smith as Deadshot. But these were voluntary choices by Gunn. He says: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cI just don\u2019t know why Joker would be in the Suicide Squad. He wouldn\u2019t be helpful in that type of war situation.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gunn also explains casting <strong>Idris Elba<\/strong> as Bloodsport and the significance of the role:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really wanted to work with Idris. It is a multi-protagonist film\u2026 But if there\u2019s one protagonist, it\u2019s Idris. And I wanted somebody who had that gruff, \u2018Unforgiven\u2019-type feeling about him. This guy who had been reduced from being a bigshot supervillain \u2014 he took Superman out of the sky \u2014 [to] now scraping gum off the floor at the beginning of the movie. He absolutely doesn\u2019t want any part of it. He just has accepted this is his life. And I just think that character is Idris Elba.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-harley-really-had-to-return\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Harley_really_had_to_return\"><\/span>Why Harley really had to return <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No matter the changes, he intended on keeping Robbie as Harley Quinn, if only for the change it brought <em>him<\/em>. He says: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cFor me, Harley Quinn belongs on the wall next to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk. Most of my career has been writing characters who existed in the comics but weren\u2019t well-defined personalities, and having to create their cinematic personalities, whether it\u2019s Star-Lord or Drax or Groot, who were all very different in the comics. Harley was pretty incredibly written by Paul Dini from the beginning, and so to be able to capture the essence of that character \u2014 her chaotic, sweet nature \u2014 and give her her due as the trickster and allow her to go wherever she wants, was surprising even to me as a writer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Suicide Squad <\/em>\u2014 minus the Joker \u2014 comes to theaters and HBO Max on August 6th.\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
