Netflix has experimented with the genre somewhat, including interactive television shows like \u201cBlack Mirror: Bandersnatch\u201d and a \u201cStranger Things\u201d mobile game, but hired a new executive last week to jumpstart the actual production of mobile games for Netflix\u2019s app. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cWe view gaming as another new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted TV,\u201d Netflix executives said in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/s22.q4cdn.com\/959853165\/files\/doc_financials\/2021\/q2\/FINAL-Q2-21-Shareholder-Letter.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">a letter to shareholders<\/a> Tuesday. \u201cGames will be included in members\u2019 Netflix subscription at no additional cost similar to films and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a discussion related to its second-quarter earnings report Tuesday, executives including co-Chief Executive Reed Hastings described the effort as part of Netflix\u2019s core efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a one-product company with a bunch of supporting services,\u201d Netflix co-Chief Executive Reed Hastings said, specifically stating that videogames were part of the product, not a supporting service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really see this as an extension of our core product offering,\u201d Netflix Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters<strong> <\/strong>added. He characterized the gaming push as a multiyear effort that will start \u201crelatively small\u201d and \u201ccontinuously improve, based on what members tell us is working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Netflix sees a chance to differentiate its gaming experience, Peters added, around its vast library of intellectual property and will focus on mobile devices and TV set-top boxes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a rich opportunity to improve quality-of-game experience,\u201d one that lets fans of Netflix\u2019s original content \u201cgo further and put their [gaming] energies there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diversifying into games has seemed inevitable, given Netflix\u2019s suddenly brutal streaming competition with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> giants such as Walt Disney Co.<br \/>\n        DIS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203410047\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.20%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Apple Inc.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.60%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       AT&amp;T Inc.<br \/>\n        T,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203165245\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.43%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       as well as slackening growth of new subscribers for Netflix, which missed second-quarter earnings estimates Tuesday and underwhelmed with its forecast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: Netflix says subscriber gains won\u2019t bounce back as fast as Wall Street wants, stock falls<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe think mobile is a great platform \u2014 it is mature, with great tools, and a developer community,\u201d Peters said during the 40-minute video call. \u201cIt checks all of those boxes.\u201d Peters also indicated Netflix will license its gaming offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the move to create a new unit dedicated to making and distributing games, comes fraught with challenges. Chief among them: It could lead to a confrontation with Apple. Netflix could need approval from Apple to stream games in its mobile app on iPhones and iPads \u2014 Apple has required rivals like Microsoft Corp. Corp.\u00a0<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.83%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Facebook Inc.<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.40%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       to have each game in a streaming platform approved individually.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a major component of Epic Games Inc.\u2019s recent high-profile antitrust lawsuit against Apple is that the App Store has restrictions that aren\u2019t tenable for some developers, creating a lopsided competitive landscape for Apple Arcade, a videogame subscription service available on iOS. Apple allows services that stream movies to offer them all in a single app, but forces services that stream games to separate each game for individual listing and review.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: Apple vs. Epic: Why cloud gaming became a hot topic at landmark antitrust trial<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can use Netflix\u00a0with a native app and I can see lots of different movies or TV shows or whatever. Is it that you didn\u2019t want to use a subscription model?\u201d a confused Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers asked at one point during the three-week Apple-Epic trial in May.<\/p>\n<p>Executives from Microsoft and Nvidia Corp.<br \/>\n        NVDA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200467500\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.89%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       testified about the technological hoops they were made to jump through, at Apple\u2019s request. Lori Wright, vice president of business development at Microsoft, said the software giant spent four months discussing with Apple\u00a0how to launch its xCloud service as a native app, only to claim Apple demanded Microsoft, Nvidia and others list cloud games as separate apps.<\/p>\n<p>Submitting Xbox games one-by-one was too onerous, Wright said, forcing Microsoft to resort to making a web app. This not only represented a technological hurdle for Microsoft, she said, but also inconvenienced consumers. Users aren\u2019t used to installing apps from the web on their iPhones.<\/p>\n<p>An Nvidia executive, meanwhile, explained how it had tried to get its GeForce Now cloud gaming service into the App Store, but had faced the same restrictions as Microsoft. \u201cThere are less controls over the streaming, so you could argue in some ways it\u2019s worse\u201d than a native app, said Aashish Patel, Nvidia\u2019s director of product management.<\/p>\n<p>With games coming to the Netflix service in addition to movies and episodic series, the same restrictive scenario could unfold, setting the two streaming rivals on a collision course. Netflix will not charge for games, nor will it have microtransactions \u2014 the bane of many gamers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have to think about ads, we don\u2019t have to think about in-game purchases or other monetization,\u201d Peters said during the video call. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to think about per-title purchases. Really, we can do what we have been doing on the movie and series side, which is just hyper, laser-focused on delivering the best game experiences that we can.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Apple and Epic did not respond to email messages seeking comment on Netflix\u2019s foray into gaming.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix\u2019s entry into gaming over the next year would also have a ripple effect on its overall business structure, calling into question how it distributes content and how much it charges subscribers, according to at least two financial analysts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne option\/solution\/path Netflix could take would be to segregate video games into the Premium tiers of service,\u201d AB Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger said in a July 15 note. \u201cFor example, if you want videogames, maybe you need to subscribe to the Premium (4S) Plan. If you don\u2019t want them, you can subscribe to the Basic (1S) or Standard (2S) Plan. That pricing strategy would require Netflix to deviate from a core product tenet they have so far held sacred, which is that all Netflix members have access to all content (that\u2019s available in their market).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother option Netflix could choose would be to characterize the games as \u2018free-to-play,\u2019 as for so many successful videogames,\u201d Juenger wrote. \u201cThe trick here is to ensure subscribers who don\u2019t want videogames believe that they really aren\u2019t<br \/>\u2018paying\u2019 for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne offers even more cautionary words in a July 16 note. \u201cThe risks and points of caution reflect the lack of success other even larger consumer tech platforms have had despite significant effort and investment\u2026 To succeed in gaming will require a significant shift in resources and priorities for the company.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Swinburne points to the struggles of Amazon.com Inc.<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.66%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Google parent Alphabet Inc.<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.31%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.43%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       in expanding their cloud-based game distribution platforms, Luna and Stadia, respectively, because of \u201ca lack of unique content offerings and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> limitations.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"byline article__byline\">\n<p>      <span>By<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"author  hasMenu\" data-scrim='{\"type\":\"author\",\"header\":\"Jon Swartz\",\"subhead\":\"The Wall Street Journal\",\"list\":[]}' itemscope itemprop=\"author\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/Person\">\n<h4 itemprop=\"name\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jon_Swartz\"><\/span>Jon Swartz<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
