{"id":304038,"date":"2021-07-21T02:17:39","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T23:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/lawmaker-who-oversees-election-board-has-ties-to-4-on-payroll\/"},"modified":"2021-07-21T02:17:39","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T23:17:39","slug":"lawmaker-who-oversees-election-board-has-ties-to-4-on-payroll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/lawmaker-who-oversees-election-board-has-ties-to-4-on-payroll\/","title":{"rendered":"#Lawmaker who oversees Election Board has ties to 4 on payroll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Lawmaker who oversees Election Board has ties to 4 on payroll<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The state lawmaker tasked with oversight of the scandal-plagued city Board of Elections has at least four\u00a0people close to her who are currently or were previously employed by the patronage-laden agency, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent conflict of interest, Assemblywoman Latrice Walker (D-Brooklyn) chairs the body\u2019s Election Law committee and helmed its hearing this week examining the Big Apple\u2019s ranked-choice voting system in the aftermath of the BOE botching the preliminary tallies from the Democratic mayoral primary. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all working very hard to reform the Board of Elections and she\u2019s very important in the Assembly to making that happen,\u201d said former Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, who now heads the good government group Citizens Union. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not good,\u201d she added. \u201cIt appears to be a conflict of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Records filed in Brooklyn Housing Court show that Walker shared a Herkimer Street address with Jonathan Anderson, a former BOE employee who she tagged in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> post with photos of her daughter. Anderson separately posted scores of pictures of the adorable child, who he often identifies as his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing in the universe is TIME,\u201d he wrote in one December posting. \u201cMy baby is turning 9 (born) today. Let\u2019s shower her with some love.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Anderson started at the BOE in 2005, payroll records show. The Post confirmed his identity through photographs, social media postings and public records. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat be the case, they share a child, but there\u2019s not a family by any measure,\u201d said Walker\u2019s spokesman Hank Sheinkopf. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is not related to the other people involved,\u201d he claimed. \u201cThey are Republicans. She would in no way assist Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither Walker nor Sheinkopf would answer questions about the Facebook or Twitter postings that mention familial connections. <\/p>\n<p>The revelations of close ties between Walker and the embattled agency come just a day after the powerful lawmaker held an invitation-only <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/ranked-choice-voting-allies-and-foes-sound-during-lengthy-hearing?utm_campaign=shared_twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\">hearing Monday<\/a>, where prominent critics of New York\u2019s ranked-choice voting renewed their case against the switchover. <\/p>\n<p>The hearing\u2019s focus came in spite of the BOE\u2019s own admission the error was caused by a staffer who failed to properly clear sample ballots from a test run of the new ranked-choice voting computer tabulation system \u2014 and was not a result of the RCV switchover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us be clear: RCV was not the problem, rather a human error that could have been avoided,\u201d the agency said in a statement released in the aftermath of the screwup. <\/p>\n<p>Walker\u2019s hearing prominently featured a key booster of legislation to repeal ranked-choice voting in the City Council, Councilman I. Daneek Miller (D-Queens), who appeared in the second panel of the day. His bill has just five sponsors among the body\u2019s 51 members. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Councilman I. Daneek Miller, an opponent of ranked choice voting, spoke at Walker\u2019s hearing.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Photo by Sarah Stier\/Getty Images for QBFC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another prominent critic, Hazel Dukes, the head of the New York chapter of the NAACP, appeared in the third panel. <\/p>\n<p>The good government groups that backed passage of ranked-choice voting in the 2019 charter election were consigned to the fifth set of speakers that day, according to the speaker\u2019s list. <\/p>\n<p>BOE officials did not appear at the hearing. A BOE spokeswoman said Monday the agency had insufficient time to prepare after receiving an invitation to testify just five days beforehand \u2014 even though the hearing was announced two weeks in advance. <\/p>\n<p>Under the state constitution, the BOE is run by appointees from the county Democratic and Republican parties. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a setup that has made the agency virtually immune to repeated calls for reform and turned the agency into a place where the friends, relatives and former staffers of politicians often find employment or side gigs. <\/p>\n<p>Reformers and good government groups \u2014 many of whom backed the changeover to ranked-choice voting \u2014 renewed their calls for state lawmakers to overhaul the BOE following the latest fiasco. <\/p>\n<p>They found an ally in lawmakers in the state Senate, where Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Westchester) promised hearings and a reform package. <\/p>\n<p>However, the calls received a far more circumspect response from the Assembly, which is run by Speaker Carl Heastie, whose former intern is now the chairman of the Bronx Democratic Party and once ran the organization himself. <\/p>\n<p>The BOE spokeswoman declined to comment when asked about Walker and the Andersons.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
