has grown by <\/span><b>2.3%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the past year, increasing by <\/span><b>117 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 12 months \u2013 that\u2019s almost 10 million new users per month.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internet users have increased by more than <\/span><b>a quarter of a billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since this time last year, registering year-on-year growth of close to 6%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><b>4.80 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> internet users around the world today, equating to almost <\/span><b>61%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the world\u2019s total population.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media user numbers have jumped by more than <\/span><b>13%<\/b><span target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sensortower.com\/blog\/top-apps-worldwide-june-2021-by-downloads\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensor Tower<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that the TikTok mobile app was downloaded roughly 57 million times in June 2021 alone, so there\u2019s a good chance that the platform\u2019s active user base continues to grow (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">note that we\u2019ve removed figures for China from Sensor Tower\u2019s total, because we treat Douyin as a separate app).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<figure platforms find ways to adapt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, those changes don\u2019t diminish the broader opportunities available to marketers within digital and social 400;\">We\u2019ve teamed up with GWI to bring you some detailed insights into gaming activities this quarter, taken from the company\u2019s new <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" important role in people\u2019s news habits, it\u2019s critical to remember that social media environments may have a negative impact on news credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, marketers and publishers may want to think carefully about how they use social channels to promote and distribute news content, especially if that content relates to potentially class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once again, the data in this quarter\u2019s report demonstrates elevated growth in digital use and adoption around the world, creating a variety of opportunities for marketers everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I confess I\u2019m surprised by these sustained high levels of growth, especially when it comes to social media user numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">initial<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spikes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in user growth that we saw at the start of the coronavirus pandemic were perhaps to be expected, but I\u2019m unsure as to why those growth rates haven\u2019t already returned to the levels we saw prior to the outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, while my expectation is that we\u2019ll start to see quarter-on-quarter growth rates fall from their recent highs later this year, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if that deceleration is still a few months away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, with ongoing delays in reporting updates to internet user numbers, we may see a significant jump in those metrics as new data starts to become available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what does this mean for marketers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are my top tips for the second half of 2021:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Focus on macro trends:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s easy to get distracted by short-term changes in the numbers, especially when fluctuations make for great headlines. However, the underlying story seems clear: our audiences have significantly increased their use of connected devices and services over recent months, and it\u2019s unlikely that they\u2019ll completely return to their pre-COVID habits. As a result, growth trends in digital activity don\u2019t face the same risk of a downward \u2018correction\u2019 that we might expect to see in areas such as stock market prices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Prepare for change:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new privacy policies, the demise of third-party cookies, and changes to online legislation are combining to create ideal conditions for advertising\u2019s \u2018perfect storm\u2019. Of course, this may all turn out to be another <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Year_2000_problem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennium Bug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but with evidence of change already visible in some of this quarter\u2019s numbers, I\u2019d recommend opting for safe instead of sorry. If you haven\u2019t already done so, now is the time to review which of your marketing activities depend on data and targeting practices that may be affected by these changes, and to develop contingency plans that will ensure your marketing efforts can continue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Embrace digital utility:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many of today\u2019s most successful digital companies focus on two key industries \u2013\u00a0communication and entertainment. However, the next wave of digital innovation will likely focus on everyday utility, with the rapid digitization of education, banking, and healthcare leading the way. These industries offer fewer advertising opportunities than\u00a0a new form of entertainment might do, but the changes they\u2019ll bring to people\u2019s everyday activities will likely have a knock-on effect on people\u2019s digital expectations. As a result, I\u2019d recommend exploring how you might use digital channels to create new kinds of value for your audiences, rather than using them solely to promote existing products and services.
