NASA\u2019s\u00a0Hubble Space Telescope (HST)\u00a0has delivered its first images since the telescope\u2019s payload computer suddenly halted on June 13.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The pictures show a galaxy with what the agency calls\u00a0\u201cextended spiral arms\u201d\u00a0and said in a release is the first high-resolution look at a pair of colliding galaxies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The photos were taken by a program spearheaded by the University of Washington\u2019s Julianne Dalcanton.<\/p>\n

Other potential targets<\/a>\u00a0for the program included globular star clusters and aurorae on Jupiter.<\/p>\n

Science<\/a> observations\u00a0restarted on July 17, after the telescope\u2019s main computer failed to receive a signal from the payload computer and subsequently placed Hubble\u2019s science instruments into safe mode.<\/p>\n

NASA\u2019s mission analysts, working from the\u00a0Greenbelt, Maryland, Goddard Space Flight Center mission control in addition to remotely and engineers worked together to analyze the issue and determine its cause.<\/p>\n

The HST has been in orbit app<\/a>roximately 340 miles above\u00a0Earth\u00a0for more than 30 years. The telescope was built in the 1980s and NASA said that Hubble alumni had returned to aid in the recovery effort.<\/p>\n

The team looked over 40-year-old paperwork, hoping to diagnose the problem quickly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While examining the potential of a degrading memory module, NASA switched to backup modules.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then, the team turned on Hubble\u2019s backup payload computer for the first time in space. Both tasks failed to resolve the issue.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Next, looking at other hardware \u2013 like the Command Unit\/Science Data Formatter and the Power Control Unit \u2013 and switching to backups took 15 hours of spacecraft commanding.<\/p>\n

The main computer was turned off and a \u201cbackup safe mode computer\u201d temporarily took over the spacecraft, several boxes had to be powered for the first time and hardware needed interfaces switched,<\/p>\n

More than 50 people worked on the switch to backup hardware, testing procedures on a\u00a0high-fidelity simulator<\/a>\u00a0and holding a formal review of the proposed plan.<\/p>\n

The team also analyzed data from earlier testing and identified the Power Control Unit as the potential source of their worries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Making the switch to the backup side of the Science Instrument and Command & Data Handling unit and backup Power Control Unit, NASA was successful on July 15 at 11:30 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to see that Hubble has its eye back on the universe, once again capturing the kind of images that have intrigued and inspired us for decades,\u201d\u00a0NASA Administrator Bill Nelson<\/a>\u00a0said. \u201cThis is a moment to celebrate the success of a team truly dedicated to the mission. Through their efforts, Hubble will continue its 32nd year of discovery and we will continue to learn from the observatory\u2019s transformational vision.\u201d<\/p>\n

The HST has taken more than 1.5 million observations of the universe in its lifetime, contributing to some of the most\u00a0significant discoveries of the cosmos<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Most observations missed while science operations were down will be rescheduled.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
