\n Libertarian: Teachers Thump Science \u2014 and Kids<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Los Angeles Unified School District\u2019s decision not to carry out any in-person instruction come fall \u201cwas a political victory for teachers and a defeat for families, science and opportunity for all,\u201d sighs Bloomberg Opinion\u2019s Virginia Postrel. The inordinate risk-averseness of union-backed teachers who pushed for the move runs against what science tells us: namely, \u201cthat children are unlikely to transmit COVID-19\u201d to other kids or adults. Plus, \u201cin a city where President Donald Trump is the devil,\u201d whatever he stands for \u2014 opening schools, for example \u2014 \u201cmust be a bad idea.\u201d Ignored in the decision-making were the many poor and immigrant \u201ckids who already start at a disadvantage, have no parent at home to coach them through the lessons . . . and have limited Internet access.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: A College-Sports Calamity<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some \u201c100 colleges and universities with lucrative football and\/or basketball programs,\u201d including Stanford, are \u201cfacing an unparalleled funding crisis\u201d owing to the coronavirus lockdowns, reports National \u00adReview\u2019s Jim Geraghty. Playing football is impossible without \u201csome risk of spreading the coronavirus,\u201d after all, but if \u201call non-conference game<\/a>s are canceled, schools will lose about $160 million.\u201d Worse, the cancelations will devastate college athletes, often young men from \u201cpoor backgrounds\u201d who \u201cchose to risk a career-ending injury\u201d for a college scholarship and a chance at a professional contract.<\/p>\n

From the left: The Real Racist<\/strong><\/p>\n

Daniel Bergner\u2019s New York Times profile of \u201cWhite Fragility\u201d author and \u201canti-racism trainer\u201d Robin DiAngelo reveals just how \u201ckooky, harmful and outright racist\u201d her ideas are, argues New York magazine\u2019s Jonathan Chait. For DiAngelo, individual merit is \u201ca myth to be debunked,\u201d and even a remarkable figure such as Jackie Robinson is \u201ca mere pawn of systemic oppression.\u201d Her ideas, moreover, \u201cliterally replicate anti-black \u00adracism,\u201d with a call for \u201cwhites-only groups\u201d to discuss \u201cracial consciousness.\u201d She and other \u201ctrainers\u201d go so far as to criticize hard work, \u201cobjective, rational thinking\u201d and \u201ccareful planning\u201d as racist. Far from being \u201canti-racist,\u201d the ideology DiAngelo peddles looks \u201cvery much like racism itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Biden\u2019s Lost Cause<\/strong><\/p>\n

At American Greatness, Conrad Black shrugs off polls showing Joe Biden with commanding double-digit leads over President Trump: \u00ad\u201cAlmost all of these polls are of echelons of the population and not of likely voters, and there is always a reticence among pro-Trump respondents.\u201d What \u201cDemocrats and their media<\/a> toadies\u201d ignore is that the president has time and again proved \u201cpractically indestructible.\u201d This is the same man who mounted a business comeback after \u201che was technically insolvent, facing app<\/a>roximately 100 banks that had loaned him several billion dollars.\u201d The year 2016 likewise saw him pull off the seemingly impossible: winning a presidential election after \u201chis party chairman and even his vice-presidential candidate\u201d ran away from him and his scandals. Trump just possesses an \u201cimpenetrable resistance\u201d amid his own storms.<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: An Upper-Middle-Class Revolt<\/strong><\/p>\n

While its slogans sound radical, Michael Lind writes at The Bellows, \u201cthe goal of so-called progressivism in 2020s America is to expand employment opportunities for college-educated, center-left professionals, while adding new wings to the welfare state that are tailored to their personal needs.\u201d Understanding its class dynamics, he argues, reveals the true nature of the unrest roiling America: as a war of the upper middle against the working and lower-middle classes. \u201cThe slogan \u2018Defund the Police\u2019 is interpreted by the bourgeois professional left to mean transferring tax revenues from .\u2009.\u2009. mostly unionized but not college-educated\u201d workers to college-educated \u201cprofessionals\u201d such as themselves. Free college and debt forgiveness would likewise \u201cdisproportionately benefit the professional bourgeoisie.\u201d Bottom line: This is \u201csocial democracy for the professional class.\u201d<\/p>\n
