A Massachusetts couple subjected to threats and other bizarre harassment from former eBay employees filed a civil lawsuit against the Silicon Valley giant on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

David and Ina Steiner say in their\u00a0lawsuit filed in Boston federal court<\/a>\u00a0that the company engaged in a conspiracy to \u201cintimidate, threaten to kill, torture, terrorize, stalk and silence them\u201d in order to \u201cstifle their reporting on eBay.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Natick residents, who run EcommerceBytes, an online news<\/a>letter focused on the e-commerce industry, say they were subjected to cyberstalking, death threats, bizarre deliveries, and in-person surveillance from company workers. They\u2019re seeking damages to be awarded by a jury.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been an unbelievably difficult ordeal for my wife and I,\u201d David Steiner said in a statement Wednesday. \u201cNever did we imagine doing our jobs as journalists would lead to this. We want to protect the rights of reporters and their freedom of the press. We have endured enormous cruelty and abuse and feared for our lives. If this behavior can happ<\/a>en to us, it can happen to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spokespersons for eBay didn\u2019t respond to an email seeking comment.<\/p>\n

Several\u00a0former eBay employees were charged last June\u00a0for their roles in the harassment campaign. At least\u00a0five have already pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors have said the harassment included anonymous deliveries of items like live insects, a funeral wreath, and a bloody pig face Halloween mask to the couple\u2019s home. The employees also sent pornographic magazines with the husband\u2019s name on it to their neighbor\u2019s house and planned to break into the couple\u2019s garage to install a GPS device on their car.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a determined, systematic effort by senior employees of a major company to destroy the lives of a couple in Natick all because they published content that company executives didn\u2019t like,\u201d then-US Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling said at the time.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
