That\u2019s still a bit away, but Warner Bros. and IMAX gave me and few lucky others a sneak peek of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> fiction epic based on Frank Herbert\u2019s famed novel. That peek included the first 10 minutes of the film, one other scene that involved sandworms and spice (is it really <em>Dune<\/em> without those?), and behind-the-scenes footage and commentary from the cast and filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019d I think of it? Seeing part of <em>Dune<\/em> on the big screen made my mask-covered jaw drop. It\u2019s a spectacle, an epic and immersive experience that shook my bones. Read on for a detailed reaction to 35 minutes of IMAX\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>-ness.<\/p>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->Warner Bros. kept the details of what we\u2019d see pretty vague before the screening. And so when it started out with some standard behind-the-scenes fare with the star-filled cast \u2014 <strong>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet,<\/strong> <strong>Oscar Isaac<\/strong>, <strong>Jason Momoa<\/strong>, <strong>David Dastmalchian<\/strong>, and <strong>Josh Brolin<\/strong>, to name just a few \u2014 I found it fun but not too exciting.<\/p>\n<p>My biggest takeaway from this part, other than thinking Jason Momoa looks weird without a beard, was everyone saying how much Villeneuve is obsessed with <em>Dune<\/em>. This, again, wasn\u2019t surprising. What was delightfully surprising, however, is that we then we got to see the first 10 minutes of Villeneuve\u2019s obsession.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-685640 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/rev-1-DU-TRL-102_High_Res_JPEG-700x293.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/rev-1-DU-TRL-102_High_Res_JPEG.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/rev-1-DU-TRL-102_High_Res_JPEG-360x151.jpeg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dunes_First_10_Minutes\"><\/span><strong><em>Dune<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u2019s First 10 Minutes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The 10 minutes open with a title card that read, \u201cDUNE: PART ONE.\u201d We knew that the movie only covered the first half of Frank Herbert\u2019s book, but that \u201cPart One,\u201d gives hope that another part is inevitably coming (whether that h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens, however, at least in part depends on how <em>Part One<\/em> performs at the box office).<\/p>\n<p>And then the movie starts, and we get the most beautiful exposition I\u2019ve ever seen. <strong>Zendaya<\/strong>\u2019s character, Chani, sets up the stakes \u2014 her desert planet, Arrakis, is full of \u201cspice,\u201d the material necessary for interstellar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>. The Empire covets that spice, of course, and extracts it without a care for Chani\u2019s people, the Fremen. She and her people are fighting back, and the imagery of them doing so with sand whiplashing around them is stunning.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->The first 10 minutes have small moments too \u2014 we see Paul Atreides (Chalamet) and his mom (<strong>Rebecca Ferguson<\/strong>) have a nice heart-to-heart that involves Paul practicing the mind-control ways of the Voice (just go with it, non-<em>Dune <\/em>readers).<\/p>\n<p>The most memorable moment, however, is a scene that\u2019s also highlighted in the latest trailer. House Atreides (Isaac, Chalamet and Brolin) meet delegates from the Empire. The imagery here, again, is epic in scale. The ship, Atreides\u2019 soldiers, the <em>costumes<\/em>. (<strong>Jacqueline West<\/strong>\u2018s costuming for <em>Dune<\/em> should get all of the awards.) Everything about it made me feel like I was in that world, a place familiar yet alien, a place shocking in its brutalist imagery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-636711\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/dune-10-700x293.jpg\" alt=\"dune trailer pink floyd\" width=\"700\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/dune-10-700x293.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/dune-10-360x151.jpg 360w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/dune-10-768x321.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/dune-10.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Score\"><\/span><strong>The Score<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>That alienness is not only brought home by the landscape and the costuming, but by the score. The IMAX event also shared a t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate between Villeneuve and composer <strong>Hans Zimmer<\/strong>. The two talk about their love of <em>Dune<\/em> and how they approached creating the music of the film. You won\u2019t hear a string quartet in the movie \u2014 the score is full of odd sounds that Zimmer reveals are human voices augmented to sound eerie and other-worldly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-685645 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/rev-1-DU-TRL-096_High_Res_JPEG-700x293.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/rev-1-DU-TRL-096_High_Res_JPEG.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/rev-1-DU-TRL-096_High_Res_JPEG-360x151.jpeg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_Get_Spicy_on_Arrakis\"><\/span><strong>Things Get Spicy on Arrakis<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_3 -->The second scene Warner Bros. showed us revealed Paul Atreides\u2019 first time on Arrakis. The scale here is expansive \u2014 House Atreides is flying over a desert landscape in <em>Dune<\/em>\u2019s equivalent of helicopters, and the noise from that, the score <em>and<\/em> the encroaching sandworm, echoed through my body.<\/p>\n<p>I knew from the first trailer that the sandworms were huge. Seeing one on an IMAX screen, however, was terrifying. Their sheer scale makes dinosaurs look like puny wimps. The one thing I\u2019ll say here, however, is that it emphasizes the connection between Chalamet and Zendaya\u2019s characters and gives us our first glimpse of Paul getting those Spice-y glowing blue eyes.<\/p>\n<p>As someone who loves the <em>Dune <\/em>books, what I\u2019ve seen makes me extremely excited to see the movie in its entirety on the big screen. I can only hope that those new to <em>Dune<\/em> will be just as blown away.
