Alpert<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>#: Feds seize sites posing as Walmart web pages to sell phony COVID-19 cures<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article__subhead\" itemprop=\"alternativeHeadline\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prosecutors_believe_the_sites_were_really_being_used_to_steal_peoples_personal_information\"><\/span>\n  Prosecutors believe the sites were really being used to steal people\u2019s personal information<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"column column--full article__content\">\n<div class=\"article__side\">\n<div class=\"container--sticky not-active\">\n<div id=\"cx-next\" data-nosnippet>\n              <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"js-article__body\" class=\"article__body article-wrap at16-col16 barrons-article-wrap\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0000343708\">\n<div class=\"barrons-article-ad-wrapper\">\n<div data-track=\"barrons-article-ad-wrap\" class=\"barrons-article-ad sticky_item\">\n<div class=\"barrons-main-article-ad-target sticky_target body_ad\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div data-layout=\"\n                inline\" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetArticleReader\n              \n              inline\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetArticleReader\n              article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object-article-reader\">\n<div class=\"audioplayer\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0000343708\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Listen to Article\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"articlereader\" data-show-title=\"false\" data-theme=\"wsj-article-reader\" data-show-header=\"false\" data-show-subscribe=\"false\" data-ads-enabled=\"true\" data-save-publication=\"false\">\n        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       The U.S. Department of Justice has seized two internet domains that had allegedly been set up to look like Walmart<br \/>\n        WMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.49%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       web pages selling a number of un<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved and experimental drugs to fight Covid-19, prosecutors said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Investigators with the Department of Homeland Security believe that the sites, which appear to have been registered from Russia in 2019, were being secretly used to steal customers\u2019 personal information, prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in Maryland said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The sites \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pharmacywalmart.com\/\" class=\"icon none\">http:\/\/pharmacywalmart.com\/<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.pharmacywalmart.com\/buy-stromectol-usa.html\" class=\"icon none\">https:\/\/en.pharmacywalmart.com\/buy-stromectol-usa.html<\/a> \u2014 featured Walmart logos and were designed to appear like official Walmart web pages, even though Walmart doesn\u2019t operate an online pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>A message sent to Walmart seeking comment wasn\u2019t im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely returned.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the sites will now see banners declaring that they have been seized by the authority of a warrant issued by a U.S. district court.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy seizing the sites, the government has prevented third parties from acquiring the names and using it to commit additional crimes, as well as prevented third parties from continuing to access the sites in their present form,\u201d the U.S. Attorney for Maryland said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investigators say it is unclear who actually was operating the sites or if they were actually fulfilling any orders for the drugs they offered. A phone number listed on the sites had an area code in Brooklyn, N.Y., but the way in which the number was written was not a typical format for U.S. numbers; instead, it followed a format used in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>A person who answered the phone at the number listed in court documents said he represented a customer support call center in London for numerous online pharmacy companies that provided online sales of drugs manufactured and sent from India. He said while the center provided customer support for the two sites in question, he didn\u2019t know who owned them and couldn\u2019t answer any questions about them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The seizures marked the 12th and 13th sites the prosecutor\u2019s office has taken command of for offering unapproved Covid-19 treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Both sites offered for sale pills including the antimalarial drug chloroquine, HIV drug Kaltera and ivermectin, which is used to treat certain parasitic infections, touting them as possible treatments for coronavirus. None of the drugs is approved for treating Covid-19.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Chloroquine became a sought after home remedy for Covid-19 for some people last year after then-President Donald Trump promoted it as a possible cure for the coronavirus. The FDA in June 2020 revoked an emergency-use authorization it had issued for chloroquine.<\/p>\n<p>The sites claimed that: \u201dIn 2020, after laboratory researches [Sic], it was found out that Kaletra shows positive results in a blockage of a COVID-19 viral replication,\u201d according to an affidavit filed by investigators.
