Former Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy and e-commerce tycoon Mark Lore are pouring cash into Tornado, an online brokerage that operates a social<\/a> network for traders.<\/p>\n

The investors \u2014 led by VCP, A-Rod and Lore\u2019s venture capital firm \u2014 are sinking a total of $10 million into Tornado, which was first founded in 2015 and is rebranding from its previous name \u201cNVSTR.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unlike other rivals such as Robinhood and TDAmeritrade, New York-based Tornado charges users to open accounts. The service costs $4.99 per month and includes 25 commission-free trades.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What sets Tornado apart from free brokerages, the company says, is access to a social network of other traders who share stock tips and trends. Users also receive curated market commentary, as well as analytical tools that are \u201ctypically only available to professional Wall Street investors,\u201d according to the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tornado says this model encourages more responsible and sustainable investing.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinancial wellness has never been a more important mission,\u201d said co-founder Patrick Aber in a statement shared with The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tornado\u2019s conscientious image seems at odds with Portnoy\u2019s past stock trading activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During the pandemic, the Barstool founder livestreamed day-trading sessions, declaring that \u201cstocks only go up\u201d and randomly buying shares based on letter tiles he pulled out of a Scrabble bag. <\/p>\n

Portnoy helped inspire a movement of young, risky traders who used retail trading app<\/a>s like Robinhood to send stocks like Game<\/a>stop and AMC flying and crashing for seemingly no reason \u2014 making some traders filthy rich while leaving others penniless.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Portnoy gave Tornado, which Aber co-founded with Bernard George, a full-throated endorsement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of chaos in the stock market,\u201d he said in a release. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to know who has your back. The platform Bernard and Patrick are building at Tornado aims to give everyone the power to become a better investor \u2014 doesn\u2019t matter where you start from.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
