\n Yoenis Cespedes played his first game<\/a> in the outfield in more than two years when he started in left in the Mets\u2019 6-0 loss to the Yankees in an exhibition game in The Bronx on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

But the closest the slugger got to a ball was when he watched Aaron Judge\u2019s blast go into the seats in left. Cespedes, by design, only played three innings.<\/p>\n

Still, the Mets remain encouraged by what they\u2019ve seen from the 34-year-old, who is coming off multiple foot surgeries.<\/p>\n

And that was even true on the Judge home run.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe drop step going back that he did tonight \u2014 unfortunately the ball went over the wall \u2014 but it looked natural for me,\u2019\u2019 manager Luis Rojas said.<\/p>\n

Next time, perhaps Cespedes will actually get a ball hit to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel comfortable with him out there,\u2019\u2019 Rojas said. \u201cThat\u2019s why he was out there for the innings that he was. Not getting a chance [Sunday] will take us to another level where he might play a few more innings next time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mets have three intrasquad games scheduled before they open the regular season Friday against the Braves in Queens.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, our hope is to play him on both ends,\u2019\u2019 Rojas said of Cespedes\u2019 ability to hit and play the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about his progression running the bases,\u2019\u2019 Rojas said. \u201cWe saw him try to leg out an infield single [Saturday]. That\u2019s a good taste of something he hasn\u2019t done for a while. Similar to that is what we want to see with some chances in left field.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rojas wants Cespedes to get tested in the outfield with routine things like calling off a teammate for a fly ball.<\/p>\n

So far, Cespedes has been limited to mostly showing off his agility in scrimmages, drills and other controlled environments. Soon, there will be less opportunity for those chances.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, I\u2019m surprised with what he\u2019s able to do,\u2019\u2019 Rojas said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
