{"id":305500,"date":"2021-07-22T15:56:43","date_gmt":"2021-07-22T12:56:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nixing-filibuster-would-throw-congress-into-chaos\/"},"modified":"2021-07-22T15:56:43","modified_gmt":"2021-07-22T12:56:43","slug":"nixing-filibuster-would-throw-congress-into-chaos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nixing-filibuster-would-throw-congress-into-chaos\/","title":{"rendered":"#Nixing filibuster would &#8216;throw Congress into chaos&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Nixing filibuster would &#8216;throw Congress into chaos&#8217;<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President Biden threw cold water on Democrats\u2019 push to eliminate the legislative filibuster, saying he did not want to get \u201cwr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed up\u201d in arguments about a move that would \u201cthrow the entire Congress into\u00a0chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commander-in-chief made the comments in a CNN town hall Wednesday night after being asked by a first-year law student about abolishing the Senate rule to pass federal legislation countering GOP-led election security bills that have popped up in state houses nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Biden began by explaining that he supported returning to the days when senators would have to be present in the Senate chamber to filibuster, though nothing beyond that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were to filibuster, you had to stand on the floor and hold the floor,\u201d he explained \u201cSo you had to take \u2014 there were significantly fewer filibusters in those days. In the middle of the civil rights movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he thinks protecting the filibuster is more important than protecting voting rights, Mr. Biden responded, \u201cNo, it\u2019s legislation, he then added that, \u201c[W]hat I also want to do, I want to make sure we bring along not just all the Democrats, we bring along Republicans who I know know better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I don\u2019t want to do is get wrapped up around whether this is all about the filibuster,\u201d the president said of the Senate blocking S. 1,\u201d he continued, \u201cYou will throw the entire Congress into chaos and nothing will get done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president was elected on a platform of \u201cunity\u201d and bipartisanship and entered the White House as a three-decade veteran of the Senate, where he and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) developed a personal friendship.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img progressive agenda. <\/p>\n<p>Making the infrastructure legislation a bipartisan effort has thus been a major focus for House and Senate Democratic leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I want to do is I\u2019m\u00a0trying to bring the country\u00a0together, and I don\u2019t want the debate to\u00a0only be about whether or not we\u00a0have a filibuster or exceptions\u00a0to the filibuster or going than you\u2019re going to\u00a0throw the entire Congress into\u00a0chaos and nothing will get done. Nothing at all will get done.\u00a0And there\u2019s a lot at stake.\u00a0The most important one is the right\u00a0to vote, that\u2019s the single most important\u00a0one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House passed the For the People Act in early March, but it failed 51-49 in the Senate because of the legislative filibuster, the Senate rule requiring 60 members to end debate on most topics and move forward to a vote.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans blocked the bill because they argued it represented a breathtaking federal infringement on states\u2019 authority to conduct their own elections without fraud.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"Rep.
