When these charged particles hit the atmosphere, they release electromagnetic radiation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/xo23fcyip6?videoFoam=true&amp;autoplay=true&amp;silentAutoPlay=true\" title=\"Bumper 06 Video\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">However, the aurorae of Jupiter are (as might be expected) far more powerful than the iridescent displays we see at home. Hundreds of gigawatts of X-ray energy released in the auroral displays of Jupiter would be powerful energy to (momentarily) feed all human energy needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">And, oddly, there are also regular flashes of light that blaze up every half hour or so, adding another piece to this mystery of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/did-jupiter-collide-with-a-massive-planet-47353e4a9e62?source=friends_link&amp;sk=b38b80c83775cf91569cfb9f30d8e57b\">Jupiter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cSince their discovery 40 years ago, the processes that produce Jupiter\u2019s x-ray flares have remained unknown. Here, we report simultaneous in situ satellite and space-based telescope observations that reveal the processes that produce Jupiter\u2019s x-ray flares, showing surprising similarities to terrestrial ion aurora,\u201d researchers describe in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/7\/28\/eabf0851\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Science Advances<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"graf graf--h4\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Flash_Woo%E2%80%8A%E2%80%94%E2%80%8Aooh\"><\/span>Flash! Woo\u200a\u2014\u200aooh!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Regular flashes near the magnetic poles of Jupiter are seen every few tens of minutes, erupting in X-rays, as well as ultraviolet, infrared, and radio waves. For four decades, the cause of Jovian auroral lights remained a mystery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">In order to study this phenomenon, researchers compared 26 hours of X-ray data from the European Space Agency\u2019s XMM-Newton observatory with close-up images of Jupiter taken at the same time by the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/juno-spacecraft-makes-waves-at-jupiter-for-extended-mission\/\">Juno orbiter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\"><p>\u201cWe must believe then, that as from hence we see Saturn and Jupiter; if we were in either of the Two, we should discover a great many Worlds which we perceive not; and that the Universe extends so in infinitum.\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200aCyrano de Bergerac<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">They found that this mystery of Jupiter, triggered by periodic vibrations in the magnetic field of the King of the Planets. During this study, regular flashes were <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing with astounding regularity, every 27 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cWe have seen Jupiter producing X-ray aurora for four decades, but we didn\u2019t know how this happened. We only knew they were produced when ions crashed into the planet\u2019s atmosphere\u2026 Now we know these ions are transported by plasma waves\u200a\u2014\u200aan explanation that has not been proposed before, even though a similar process produces Earth\u2019s own aurora,\u201d explains<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/news\/2021\/jul\/scientists-solve-40-year-mystery-over-jupiters-x-ray-aurora\">Dr. William Dunn<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the Mullard Space <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Laboratory at University College London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Charged ions in this process are supplied by Jupiter\u2019s highly-volcanic innermost large moon,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/the-volcanoes-of-io-seen-in-a-new-light-1ef37def6ad2?source=friends_link&amp;sk=0d0886046542ab0b2e0976b73019baea\">Io<\/a>. S<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ped of their electrons, this forms a ring of plasma around the massive planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Jupiter is home to a massive magnetic field\u200a\u2014\u200aroughly 20,000 times greater than that in our home world. The cause of the magnetic field waves examined in this study remains uncertain. However, these oscillations may be driven by the solar wind, or from plasma flows around Jupiter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">It is also possible that this process, seen on<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/the-ice-giant-planet-that-put-jupiter-and-saturn-in-their-place-451b9145687b?source=friends_link&amp;sk=f1aac993d8665bc7e436348073132c4a\">Jupiter<\/a>, also takes place throughout the Cosmos.
