Libertarian: Biden To Ban Good Showers<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden is reversing a \u201cTrump administration rule that eased restrictions on the pleasing flow of multiheaded showers,\u201d laments Reason\u2019s Christian Britschgi<\/a>. A 1992 law \u201cimposed a host of convenience-crushing\u201d regulations on app<\/a>liances, including a water-output cap of 2.5 gallons per minute on individual showerheads. Former President Barack Obama applied the limit to multiheaded units as well, but Team Trump nixed the expansion last December. Now Biden is moving to \u201cundo\u201d this \u201cwin for individual liberty.\u201d An Energy Department spokesman says this will let consumers \u201cpurchase showerheads that conserve water.\u201d Yet people could buy water-saving showerheads under the Trump rule \u2014 \u201cthe Biden administration would just force them to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: How To Reach the Un-Vaxxed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Data show that the nearly 80 million unvaccinated Americans have \u201ccomplex and heterogeneous\u201d motivations, The New York Times\u2019 Ross Douthat observes<\/a>, contra beliefs that they\u2019re mainly Fox News<\/a>-deluded anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists. So \u201cheavy-handed\u201d censorship and mandates won\u2019t work. \u201cCensoring the Internet will have little effect if many of the vaccine-hesitant are disconnected rather than very online, or drawing on personal experience rather than anti-vaxxer memes.\u201d And mandates \u201cmight alienate not just Fox viewers, but also part of the political middle.\u201d The \u201ccivically healthy\u201d way: \u201ca more patient approach\u201d combining \u201clocal outreach, public-health guidance that consistently promises normalcy as a benefit of vaccination (and doesn\u2019t withdraw it arbitrarily) and actually arguing with skeptics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education beat: Teach Equality, Not CRT<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHow our kids learn our history will, inevitably, shape how they behave when they take on the responsibilities of citizenship when they are adults,\u201d notes Richard Samuelson at RealClearPolitics<\/a>. Critical race theory follows \u201ca simplified \u2018whites are bad\u2019 and \u2018minorities good\u2019 line,\u201d but replacing \u201cthe stigmatization of blacks with stigmatization of whites is unlikely to work.\u201d For young children, who \u201chave yet to learn US history\u201d at all, \u201cteaching Americans to be proud of their country, even as they seek to improve it, is much more likely to bear fruit.\u201d The best strategy is to \u201cfocus on our common \u00adhumanity and citizenship in earlier years and to bring in the tensions \u00adbetween national and racial and ethnic identities later on.\u201d But \u201cmany of our professional educators are \u2026 sustaining racial separation\u201d instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe left\u2019s new enthusiasm for getting bad books taken off the shelves is a mistake\u201d that forgets the left\u2019s own interest in \u201cas broad a discourse as possible,\u201d warns Katha Pollitt at Dissent<\/a>. When Republicans, who \u201care far keener than Democrats to ban from school libraries books they don\u2019t like,\u201d have the upper hand, free speech is what gives leftists the space to promote \u201cunpopular positions in unfriendly places.\u201d Removing a book, such as #MeToo-accused writer Blake Bailey\u2019s Philip Roth biography, is really about not trusting people to weigh evidence.\u201d And the question of \u201cwho decides what is permissible and what is beyond the pale\u201d ultimately \u201ccomes down to who has more power.\u201d Embracing free speech \u201cmeans living with insults and stupidity and even, sometimes, evil and pain.\u201d But it puts your enemy \u201cin the same position,\u201d which \u201cmay be as good as it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Border watch: It\u2019s Getting Worse<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Border Patrol reported the most action in 21 years in June,\u201d \u00adreports Stephen Dinan at The Washington Times<\/a>. \u201cAgents recorded 178,416 arrests, defying Homeland Security officials\u2019 public predictions that activity at the border would cool off in the summer.\u201d That includes a renewed \u201csurge of illegal immigrant children,\u201d such that \u201cthe Border \u00adPatrol had more than 1,400 in its custody as of Sunday night, the highest number in nearly three months.\u201d Plus: \u201cDeaths of migrants are up,\u201d \u00addespite \u201ca record-setting year of Border Patrol rescues,\u201d while \u201cseizures of the dangerous synthetic opioid fentanyl have set a record,\u201d and \u201cexperts say the seizure number indicates that the amount of drugs getting through the border is also up.\u201d <\/p>\n
