“#James Purefoy and his celeb pals return for ‘The Wine Show’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t hard for James Purefoy to convince his fellow actor and pal, Dominic West, to join him in Portugal for \u201cThe Wine Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked him if he could do it because we were having a scheduling conflict with [series<\/a> regular] Matthew Goode,\u201d Purefoy, 57, told The Post. \u201cI left him a voice message: \u2018OK, this could be the best job offer you ever had. You arrive in a really beautiful, swanky launch up the Douro River to be collected by a classic Porsche and brought to an incredible quinta [rural historic manor] and will spend three days drinking wine. How does that sound?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHe rang me back and said, \u2018Jimmy, this is the finest job offer I\u2019ve ever had in my life.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Purefoy, Goode, Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (\u201cThe Americans,\u201d \u201cPerry Mason\u201d) and now West return for Season 3 of \u201cThe Wine Show,\u201d making its US premiere Thursday, July 29, on Sundance Now, Acorn TV.<\/p>\n

This season of the travel<\/a>ogue series features Purefoy and Goode (\u201cWatchmen,\u201d \u201cDownton Abbey,\u201d \u201cThe Crown\u201d) traversing throughout Portugal, armed with assignments from series wine expert Joe Fattorini \u2014 including learning how Portuguese wine relates to space travel, how it\u2019s connected to the Indian curry Vindaloo and its role in the country\u2019s cod industry (you\u2019ll be surprised on all three counts).<\/p>\n

Fattorini also travels to New York (pre-COVID) to dine with Rhys in several New York restaurants and, of course, drink and discuss various wines. Other adventures this season feature sommelier Charlotte Wilde and wine expert Amelia Singer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just wound up like clockwork toys and sent on our way,\u201d said Purefoy of his adventures in Portugal with Goode. (West and Purefoy sample wines at the Quinta do Noval in the Douro Valley.) \u201cThe Portuguese wine industry is complicated and they\u2019re very competitive with each other. You have to be careful not to tread on any toes and to be very sensitive. Once they let you in they\u2019re incredibly welcoming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Purefoy, along with Rhys and Goode, has been on all three seasons of \u201cThe Wine Show\u201d but said he still has a lot to learn \u2014 and it\u2019s daunting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really like drinking wine, so that helps and I\u2019m very interested in wine,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a little moment at the beginning of the third season where [he and Goode] talk about Socratic dialogue \u2014 the more you know about something the more you realize you know nothing. I\u2019m sad to say that is absolutely true\u2026and I confess I think I know less now than when we started.\u201d<\/p>\n

Purefoy and West also experience the treat of tasting \u201csome of the rarest Ports imaginable\u201d at Quinto do Noval. These wines preceded the destruction, about 20 years ago, of vineyards throughout Europe (including Italy, Portugal, France and Spain) by the Phylloxera, an insect that spreads a root-killing fungus. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis little beetle just devoured and went through all the roots,\u201d Purefoy said. \u201cThese Ports are incredibly difficult to get a hold of and almost impossible to buy. They come from tiny rows of vines pre-Phylloxera.\u201d<\/p>\n

Season 3 took about a month to film and includes the show\u2019s trademark \u201cTasting Week,\u201d in which Purefoy et al. start early in the day, sometimes at 7 a.m., then taste 16 wines in the morning, 16 in the afternoon and several more at night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat can get a little bit messy, as you can imagine,\u201d he said. \u201cIn terms of television, it\u2019s unattractive to spit [out the wine] so we sip. I learned my lesson last season; I got rather drunk\u2026so now I just take the tiniest sip of each wine. We\u2019re not proud of getting drunk. It\u2019s part of the job, unfortunately and our producers are very good. They always give us a couple of hours off at lunchtime to sober up and have a bit of a snooze before we start again.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things about this show is that it\u2019s not a very macho show at all,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of like [car series] \u2018Top Gear\u2019 for wine. I like to think that we put our arms around each other and our audience and bring them close and give them a good hug.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
