“#Twitter<\/a> is testing ‘downvote’ and \u2018upvote\u2019 buttons<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Twitter is testing a Reddit-style feature that allows users to \u201cdownvote\u201d and \u201cupvote\u201d replies, the company said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The feature \u2014 which the company described as \u201cjust a test for research\u201d \u2014 is available to an unspecified number of users, according to Twitter.<\/p>\n

Upvotes will be displayed as likes, while downvotes will not be shown publicly, the company said. Votes won\u2019t change the order in which replies are displayed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re testing this to understand the types of replies you find relevant in a convo, so we can work on ways to show more of them,\u201d Twitter said.<\/p>\n

The concept of upvoting and downvoting posts is crucial to design of Reddit, which relies on users\u2019 votes to decide what content is prominently displayed on its site.<\/p>\n

In a response to Twitter\u2019s announcement, Reddit poked fun at the similarities between the new feature and Reddit\u2019s longstanding design, calling Twitter\u2019s move \u201cINTERESTING.\u201d <\/p>\n

Twitter product lead Kayvon Beykpour had hinted at the feature last year, writing<\/a> in November that upvotes and downvotes were \u201csomething we\u2019re exploring.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear whether the feature will be rolled out to more users in the future, or if votes will eventually affect the order in which tweets are displayed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For now, the company describes the feature as an \u201cexperiment.\u201d <\/p>\n
