It\u2019s the hottest book in publishing, but our very own columnist Maureen Callahan managed to get a hold of it. Here, on a manuscript<\/a> smuggled out page-by-page by an overworked French intern, is your first exclusive excerpt from Prince Harry\u2019s new memoir<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll never forget the way that fateful day unfolded.<\/p>\n

It was 11 a.m. I had just woken up from a lengthy slumber, having been swaddled like a baby in my bespoke $4,900 D. Porthault bed linens. My eyes blinkered through the unbearably white light.<\/p>\n

\u201cMove the sun!\u201d I thundered. \u201cHow many times must I tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I heard a bothersome scurrying about as I roused myself in my master suite \u2014 er, primary suite. My wife Meghan told me that using the word \u201cmaster\u201d makes you a racist. She\u2019s helping me get woke.<\/p>\n

My bride needed to see me at once. At once!<\/p>\n

I knew it had to be important. Meghan is so uncomplaining by nature, so easily pleased, that truly something terrible must have happened.<\/p>\n

She had changed my life, Meghan had. Gotten me to notice the little people. There were so many of them. Explained what the world needed was the royal family to lecture them on race. She even got me to throw away my Nazi costume.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not allowed to have a phone, not since Las Vegas<\/a>, so I had my aide call over to William for advice. First in line, but second in hot wives, am I right? But alas he and dad were doing a world tour by private jet to talk about the problems of climate change. Terrible thing, the climate.<\/p>\n

My father doesn\u2019t use a phone either, but he says that\u2019s because he had a very bad experience back in the 1990s involving his now-wife, some feminine hygiene products and the tabloids.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can Google that for you if you\u2019d like,\u201d said my ever-considerate bride.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s Google?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

A quick look of mild disdain crossed her lovely face, replaced swiftly by a grin \u2014 nay, a Chesire cat smile, I would say.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, H,\u201d she cooed.<\/p>\n

\u201cH\u201d is her nickname for me. Meghan can\u2019t stand any royal pomp-and-circumstance. She told me from the very beginning \u2014 she had no use for titles<\/a> or airs or anything superficial, because that\u2019s not what matters to her.<\/p>\n

She did ask me later if I knew Brad Pitt or George Clooney, but I think she was just testing me. About what, I don\u2019t know. Politics, maybe? How can I be expected to know all the US presidents?<\/p>\n

Anyway, back to that morning. After I was dressed, fed and gently burped, I was carried on my chair to her wing.<\/p>\n

I burst through the door and ran to Meghan\u2019s bedroom suite, where I saw my bride ordering her ladies-in-waiting to pack up all her clothes, jewels, ball gowns, tiaras, scepters, fairy wands and glitter into her Louis Vuitton travel wardrobe<\/a>, a wedding gift from the Queen.<\/p>\n

Looking back now, I wonder if Grandmummy was sending us a message.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it, Harry!\u201d Meghan exclaimed. \u201cYou are being held hostage in this three-story, 100-room palace that your family just had gut-renovated for us! We\u2019re leaving!\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, I will admit to being confused. We hadn\u2019t even hunted stag yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, H,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She tilted her head and squinted her eyes. How I melt.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou only think you\u2019re happy. Trust me when I tell you that you are trapped. I\u2019m the only one who can save you. We\u2019re going to make a run for it with just the clothes on our backs and the $20 million your mom<\/a> \u2014 who I definitely never heard of before I met you \u2014 left as your inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut where will we go?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada,\u201d Meghan replied, whilst typing furiously into that little glowy rectangle. \u201cBut don\u2019t worry. That\u2019s just for optics. Really we\u2019re going to America, where you will truly know freedom. And Oprah. Maybe even Ted Sarandos and Bob Iger.\u201d<\/p>\n

It sounded enticing, I have to say. I didn\u2019t know who those other two guys were, but everyone knows Oprah.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we also visit Disney World?\u201d<\/a> I asked. \u201cAnd maybe get a dog?\u201d<\/p>\n

She gave me that look again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, H,\u201d she cooed. \u201cWhatever you want. Now go pack your bags and meet me at the palace gates in an hour. And whatever you do, don\u2019t tell anyone! We need to make a splash on social media<\/a>. This will be bigger than Brexit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s Brexit?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we\u2019re going to take our story straight to Netflix,\u201d which she explained to me is some kind of entertainment outlet popular with commoners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThink about it, H,\u201d she said. \u201cWouldn\u2019t you rather hang out with Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z?<\/a> Shouldn\u2019t we summer on Barry Diller\u2019s yacht? The way we\u2019re living \u2014 this isn\u2019t freedom. I\u2019m a Gwyneth at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

This, I understood. Anything for my bride \u2014 and oh, I suddenly remembered: I think we had a kid stashed<\/a> around here somewhere. The nannies always had him, so it was easy to forget.<\/p>\n

\u201cShouldn\u2019t we bring him, too?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d Meghan said. He was our reason for living, she said, and our best bargaining chip. Now we just had to sneak out of the castle, find our way to a private plane<\/a> and take off in the night without anyone noticing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meghan just rolled her eyes and pressed a button on her Insta-thingy-page. This was going to be harder than I thought.<\/p>\n
