TOKYO \u2013 Japanese residents may be worried about the prospect of a\u00a0typhoon\u00a0forming off the coast next week, but the\u00a0surfers\u00a0taking part in the Olympic Game<\/a>s are welcoming the possibility of some big waves with open arms.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Tokyo\u00a0Olympics are being held during\u00a0typhoon\u00a0season and the weather is a major talking point, with heat and humidity expected to be a major factor in many sports.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s the wind and waves that are of most importance for\u00a0surfing, which makes its Olympics debut next week.<\/p>\n

Surfline, which is providing\u00a0forecasts for the 2020 Games, predicts rising tropical cyclone surf starting on Sunday and continuing through next week, with a prolonged run of medium-sized waves during the eight-day competition window.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s going to be good waves, there\u2019s a strong\u00a0typhoon\u00a0here off the coast of Japan and we know that the waves are getting bigger,\u201d International\u00a0Surfing\u00a0Association president Fernando Aguerre told Reuters in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n

Reports of a possible\u00a0typhoon\u00a0off the coast were greeted with glee by some competitors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s small but there is swell on the way! Let\u2019s go,\u201d wrote Australian surfer Owen Wright on Instagram following his first practice session at Tsurigasaki Surf Beach, where competition begins on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Surfers\u00a0had been worried Tsurigasaki\u2019s often tiny, weak waves would make it difficult to show their skills to a huge new audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe waves have been a little bit small thus far, but there\u2019s a really good swell on the way, looking like some great winds for maybe Monday, so that should give us a good platform to showcase for the world what it\u2019s all about,\u201d New Zealand coach Matt Scorringe told a media<\/a> conference.<\/p>\n

The weather\u00a0forecast\u00a0has led to a change of plans for Billy Stairmand, one of Scorringe\u2019s athletes in the competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginally I thought it was going to be pretty small, so I brought all my small-waves boards which are shorter, flatter and little big fatter on the rails,\u201d Stairmand told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, seeing the\u00a0forecasts with the swell coming in, I brought over a few step-ups, bigger, longer boards with different tails that can do good for big conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

No matter how rough the weather gets, New Zealander Ella Williams said competitors would take it as it comes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re prepared for that, we\u2019ve been preparing for a while. It brought us here and we\u2019ll be fine,\u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
