“#James McGonagle arraigned after attempted NYC kidnapp<\/a>ing<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The man who\u00a0allegedly snatched a 5-year-old boy off a Queens sidewalk\u00a0\u2014 only to have the child\u2019s quick-thinking mom grab him back last week \u2014 made his first appearance in court on Friday.<\/p>\n

James McGonagle, 24, was remanded into custody following his arraignment in Queens Supreme Court on a two-count indictment charging him with attempted kidnapping and child endangerment, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

McGonagle, of Fresh Meadows, faces up to fifteen years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n

Disturbing surveillance video of the July 17 incident allegedly showed McGonagle sprinting out of a parked car and grabbing little Jacob Diaz, who was walking with his mom and siblings in Richmond Hill.<\/p>\n

McGonagle then allegedly shoved the boy into the backseat of the vehicle \u2014 prompting mom Dolores Diaz Lopez to jump into action.<\/p>\n

The heroic mom desperately tried to free her son, as McGonagle allegedly \u201cclutched the child\u2019s legs from the opposite side of the car and attempted to pull him back into the vehicle,\u201d the Queens District Attorney\u2019s Office said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Diaz Lopez, 45, was able to free her from the car before the creep sped away.<\/p>\n

A male passenger seen in the video \u2014 whom police sources previously told The Post is McGonagle\u2019s 55 year-old father, also named James McGonagle, \u2014 was apparently\u00a0 unaware of his son\u2019s intentions.<\/p>\n

Moments before the terrifying incident, the passenger could be heard asking \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d to which McGonagle allegedly responded \u201cWe are taking the kid,\u201d prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

McGonagle was arrested the following morning at Brookdale Hospital after police spotted him being treated for injuries to his face, the DA\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz called the incident \u201ca parent\u2019s worst fear,\u201d and praised Diaz Lopez for her courage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a brazen fashion, the defendant grabbed the little boy, who was just a few steps from his mother, and allegedly tried to kidnap him,\u201d Katz said in a statement. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a parent\u2019s worst fear. This mother fought to save her son. Never underestimate the strength of a mom. Thankfully he has been apprehended and will face justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

McGonagle is due back in court on Sept. 8.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
