Zoinks! Mindy Kaling quickly uncovered who was causing her trouble.<\/p>\n

In February, HBO Max announced plans for a \u201cScooby-Doo\u201d spinoff series<\/a> titled \u201cVelma,\u201d an adult animated comedy detailing the character\u2019s origin story. <\/p>\n

At the time, the streaming service revealed that executive producer Mindy Kaling<\/a> also would be the voice of Velma. While the casting garnered a lot of excitement, there were also haters \u2014 and criticism intensified in June when HBO Max revealed Velma would be reimagined as South Asian. <\/p>\n

On \u201cLate Night With Seth Meyers\u201d Thursday, Kaling addressed the uproar over the character getting a reimagined look.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was announced about a month ago that the Velma character would be reimagined as South Asian. And people were not happ<\/a>y,\u201d said Kaling, 42.<\/p>\n

Mindy said that the initial reaction to her involvement was positive overall. \u201cWhen it was announced that I was going to do the voice of Velma, people were very supportive and happy on Twitter<\/a>, and so I felt great,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But Kaling explained that, with a beloved show such as \u201cScooby-Doo,\u201d there are typically very dedicated fans who are wary of prequels of classic shows. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese are really intense fans, you know? Like cartoon, comic book \u2014 those are huge fans,\u201d Mindy continued, acknowledging the \u2018toon\u2019s significance. \u201cAnd especially a legacy show.\u201d <\/p>\n

Fans weighed in about how this reimagined Velma was not what they pictured, Kaling recalled. \u201cThere was a lot of \u2018So not Velma\u2019 . . . \u2018Not the classic Velma that I\u2019m always thinking about,\u2019 \u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But Kaling offered a defense of the reimagining. <\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s such a great character. She\u2019s so smart. And I just couldn\u2019t understand how people couldn\u2019t imagine a really smart, nerdy girl with terrible eyesight, and who loved to solve mysteries, could be Indian.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, there are Indian nerds. It shouldn\u2019t be a surprise to people,\u201d Kaling joked.<\/p>\n

The actress noted how the upset fans were just \u201ca small percentage of people,\u201d but the outcry over the announcement did cause her to reflect on how the show will depict the character.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really made me think, \u2018OK, we\u2019ve got to be really careful with this character,\u2019 \u201d she acknowledged, adding, \u201cWhich we will be, because we really love her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The upcoming project will be \u201can original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America\u2019s most beloved mystery solvers,\u201d according to a WarnerMedia press release.<\/a><\/p>\n
