Val Kilmer fans know the actor as the cocky Iceman in \u201cTop Gun\u201d and as the Caped Crusader in \u201cBatman Forever.\u201d He\u2019s a masculine, charismatic spitfire with a reputation for being difficult on set.<\/p>\n

But they\u2019ll be shocked to see the former heartthrob and action star today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the intimate and revealing new documentary \u201cVal,\u201d out Friday, we meet Kilmer, 61, after he\u2019s survived throat cancer. Although he denied being sick in 2016<\/a>, the actor now lives with a stoma \u2014 a hole in his throat used to breathe and speak. Today, talking for Kilmer is strenuous.<\/p>\n

So, in the doc\u2019s narrations, his son Jack speaks for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Val Kilmer. I\u2019m an actor,\u201d he begins. \u201cI was recently diagnosed with throat cancer.<\/a> Though I healed quickly from the extensive radiation and chemotherapy, what followed has left my voice impaired. I\u2019m still recovering, and it\u2019s difficult to talk and be understood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides his loving offspring, Kilmer has another extraordinary tool to tell the story of his four decades in Hollywood: a trove of videotape that he\u2019s shot since he was a little boy in California\u2019s San Fernando Valley.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While some scenes are what you\u2019d expect \u2014 audition tapes, birthday parties, footage of his two kids \u2014 the actor also filmed remarkably candid moments backstage during all of his movies<\/a>. Young actors, such as Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon, then unaccustomed to portable cameras, chitchat like nobody else is there.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like I\u2019ve lived my life, and it\u2019s sort of all in these boxes,\u201d Kilmer says, looking at his warehouse of thousands of hours of tapes. <\/p>\n

He was bitten by the showbiz bug during his California childhood, when he\u2019d create short remakes of popular films with his younger brother Wesley, who directed them. Their movies were especially cinematic because they lived next door to the famed Roy Rogers Ranch, where many Westerns were shot, and borrowed the otherworldly scenery.<\/p>\n

Kilmer\u2019s life was shattered when Wesley, just 15, died after suffering an epileptic seizure in the family pool. \u201cNo more home videos, no more makeshift plays,\u201d his narration says. \u201cMy confidant had disapp<\/a>eared into dust, and my family was never the same again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The gutted actor moved to New York, where he studied acting at the Juilliard School. In his bedroom, he hung up Wesley\u2019s artwork as a reminder.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kilmer got his big break in the 1984 film \u201cTop Secret!,\u201d a World War II spy movie parody in which he played a rock \u2018n\u2019 roll singer. Coming from a rigorous stage background, he diligently prepared for the role, only to have his hopes dashed immedia<\/a>tely.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent four months learning how to play the guitar,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I got to set, the director thought it would be funnier if I mimed. They watched me make my fingers bleed, just to see the look on my face when they told me, \u2018We like it better when you can\u2019t play.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

But \u201cTop Secret!\u201d opened the door to one of the biggest movies he\u2019d ever make: 1986\u2019s \u201cTop Gun.\u201d <\/a>The truth is, Kilmer didn\u2019t care about the gig.<\/p>\n

\u201cBelieve it or not, I didn\u2019t want to do \u2018Top Gun\u2019 at first,\u201d the opinionated artist says. \u201cI thought the script was silly, and I disliked warmongering in films. But I was under contract with the studio, so I didn\u2019t really have a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

He played Iceman, the skilled pilot with frosted hair, opposite Tom Cruise\u2019s<\/a> Maverick, and he said the duo took their characters\u2019 animosity home with them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would purposely play up the rivalry between Tom\u2019s character and mine off screen as well,\u201d Kilmer says. \u201cAnd what ended up happening is the actors, in true Method fashion, split into two distinct camps. You had Maverick and Goose on one side, Slider, Hollywood, Wolfman and me, Iceman, on the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

After \u201cTop Gun,\u201d its entire young cast enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Kilmer\u2019s part, he dreamed of working with major directors, and would shoot elaborate audition tapes for the opportunity. When Stanley Kubrick was casting \u201cFull Metal Jacket,\u201d Kilmer not only taped his tryout, but flew to London to personally deliver it.\u00a0(He didn\u2019t get cast in the film.)<\/p>\n

The strategy finally paid off when he was offered the role of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone\u2019s \u201cThe Doors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Like the Juilliard student he was, Kilmer buried himself in the role of the famous frontman. He constantly listened to and practiced The Doors\u2019 music. He only wore skintight leather pants, like Morrison, for an entire year.<\/p>\n

But the sort of prep he craved was absent from much of the rest of his career. \u201cThe kind of acting that I\u2019m really interested in, I haven\u2019t done very much in movies,\u201d he says. A low point was \u201cBatman Forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kilmer was offered the role of the comic book hero when he was in Africa on safari. Just days before he got the call, he had been wandering through an actual bat cave and took it as a sign. But as soon as filming on Joel Schumacher\u2019s movie began, the actor loathed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re in [the bat suit], you can barely move and people have to help you stand up and sit down,\u201d he says. You also can\u2019t hear anything and after a while people stop talking to you. It\u2019s very isolating.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a struggle for me to get a performance past the suit, and it was frustrating until I realized my performance was just to show up and stand where I was told to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another actor who stood where he was told to, much to Kilmer\u2019s disappointment, was his hero Marlon Brando when they made the flop \u201cThe Island of Doctor Moreau\u201d in 1996. Brando, indifferent and overweight, was depressed when the director refused to allow him creative input, so he receded. At one point, Kilmer, video camera in tow, walks up to Brando, who is lounging on a hammock outside.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your earliest childhood memory?,\u201d Kilmer asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive me a shove,\u201d replies Brando, sounding sedated.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have any memories from before you could speak,\u201d presses Kilmer.<\/p>\n

\u201cBig, big, big shove,\u201d repeats Brando. Kilmer gives up and pushes his idol\u2019s hammock.<\/p>\n

Despite a string of failures that followed for Kilmer, he never lost his passion for creating art. In 2017, he toured the country playing Mark Twain in a one-man show called \u201cCitizen Twain\u201d that he also wrote. Kilmer was about to go onstage in Nashville, Tenn., when he lost his voice and began coughing up blood.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He hasn\u2019t worked much since his cancer diagnosis, but he has found the joy in what he\u2019s able to do, like going around America meeting fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t look great and I\u2019m basically selling my old self, my old career,\u201d Kilmer says. \u201cFor many people it\u2019s like the lowest thing you can do \u2014 talk about your old pictures and sell photographs of when you were Batman or the Terminator.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it enables me to meet my fans and what ends up happening is I feel really grateful rather than humiliated because there\u2019s so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVal\u201d premieres in theaters July 23 and streams Aug. 6 on Amazon Prime<\/a>. <\/em>\n <\/div>\n
