“#De Blasio warns crowding in Astoria won\u2019t be tolerated, shuts down eatery<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Mayor Bill de Blasio warned Monday that the droves of largely maskless revelers repeatedly packing streets outside of Astoria bars and restaurants won\u2019t be tolerated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe saw some real troubling overcrowding in Astoria this weekend \u2014 we will not tolerate it,\u201d de Blasio told reporters during his daily City Hall press briefing.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner added, \u201cIt\u2019s not widespread, but where we find it, it has to be stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n

The crackdown comes after days of criticism from Gov. Andrew Cuomo that local authorities \u2014 especially in New York City \u2014 aren\u2019t doing enough to enforce social<\/a> distancing rules.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, throngs of people packed a stretch of\u00a0Astoria\u2019s Steinway Street and flouted coronavirus social distancing rules as they partied.<\/p>\n

Officials slapp<\/a>ed on eatery at the center of the action, BRIK Astoria, with an order that shuts down its outdoor dining program for a week as punishment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s one restaurant in Astoria that\u2019s been the focal point for this overcrowding. They\u2019ve been shut down,\u201d de Blasio confirmed Monday, without mentioning the restaurant by name.<\/p>\n

And Hizzoner warned that more eateries and watering holes will face consequences if the crowds continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019ll be heavier enforcement efforts by the Sheriff\u2019s Office and \u2013 when needed \u2013 by the NYPD, as well, around bars and restaurants,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to shut down restaurants, we don\u2019t want to shut down bars, but if we have to shut down a few of those, it\u2019s a hell of a lot better than seeing the coronavirus start to surge again.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio noted that even though the latest science<\/a> shows that outdoors is safer than indoors when it comes to the spread of coronavirus, it doesn\u2019t mean people should violate social distancing rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cOutdoors doesn\u2019t mean that people shouldn\u2019t forget all the tough lessons that we\u2019ve learned,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cOverwhelmingly, around the city, folks who own restaurants, bars and customers have been responsible, have been smart, have remembered to follow the rules. But not everywhere. \u201d<\/p>\n

Area residents and local elected officials have said that the block party-like scenes in Astoria have been going on for weeks, but the city only recently started to crack down on the matter.<\/p>\n

De Blasio admitted Monday he wasn\u2019t immediately aware of those complaints, some of which were made by the neighborhood Councilman Costa Constantinides (D-Queens).<\/p>\n

\u201cThis particular problem in Astoria obviously has grown and it particularly occurred very late at night and I think that\u2019s what was under-recognized,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cThere was activity early in the evenings, but did not recognize that it was so late at night when some of these problems were occurring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly before de Blasio spoke, Cuomo continued his criticism of the Big Apple\u2019s low key compliance enforcement and denounced the crowding outside of eateries across the city and state during his own press briefing at JFK Airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a problem in New York City. It\u2019s a problem in places on Long Island. It\u2019s a problem in places upstate,\u201d Cuomo said, adding, \u201cYou know very well where the congregations were because God bless social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had a high frequency in New York City and it\u2019s not a question \u2014 you had police in Astoria,\u201d Cuomo said, referring to this past weekend. \u201cThey showed up, but it\u2019s not just showing up and watching. The crowd has to be dispersed. It\u2019s violating the law. Period.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo called the hordes of young people that have been seen congregating \u201cstupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is stupid what you\u2019re doing,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t be stupid \u2014 what they\u2019re doing is stupid and reckless for themselves and for other people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor has repeatedly said that local governments must enforce compliance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police department has to enforce the law and they are not doing it,\u201d Cuomo said.<\/p>\n

Cuomo then warned, \u201cWe\u2019re gonna\u2019 have to roll back the reopening plan and we\u2019re gonna\u2019 have to close restaurants and bars \u2014 that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to have to do.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
