A mural honoring George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in Portland was vandalized by supporters of a white nationalist hate group, photos show.<\/p>\n

The artist who created the \u201cWe Stand With You\u201d mural of Floyd, Taylor and Arbery last year revealed the damage left behind by backers of the Texas-based Patriot Front on Instagram Sunday, showing their three faces covered with white paint and replaced by the hate group\u2019s website address.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sad, confused and lost for words on how much HATE and ignorance is in our community,\u201d Christian Grijalva wrote<\/a>. \u201cFor white supremacist haters to come vandalize and deface my mural and the community\u2019s mural just blows my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vandals struck sometime early Sunday, Grijalva told the Williamette Week newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe damage they did, the size of it, they probably had a team of people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Within hours of the white paint being spotted, people started calling Grijalva, who later arrived at the mural, where supporters had raised $300 to buy new supplies to restore it, the news<\/a>paper reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemoval is gonna take away from the original color,\u201d Grijalva continued. \u201cI can work with this, though. It\u2019s gonna look good, maybe by the end of the evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Photos showed about a dozen Portland residents later gathering to repair the mural, The Oregonian reported<\/a>. The faces of Floyd, Taylor and Arbery \u2014 whose killings by police or white vigilantes in Georgia led to widespread protests in 2020 \u2014 were visible again after the partial restoration, according to the photos.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was born here,\u201d Amber Boydston, a Portland activist who was among the cleanup crew, told the newspaper. \u201cI am very aware of the level of racism that Oregon is steeped in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boydston said damage to the mural, which is in a historically black neighborhood, prompted \u201cblack and brown and white anti-racist\u201d activists to respond quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to continuously send a message to people who believe in a white utopia that Oregon was once created for that dream will never be realized,\u201d Boydston said.<\/p>\n

A message seeking comment from Portland police was not immedia<\/a>tely returned early Monday.<\/p>\n

Patriot Front is a white nationalist hate group based in Texas founded in 2017, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>. The organization\u2019s website vows to \u201creclaim America\u201d after the purported failure of democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur mission is a hard reset on the nation we see today \u2014 a return to the traditions and virtues of our forefathers,\u201d its website reads<\/a>. \u201cThe same spirit that urged our ancestors onward to create this nation will once again be brought to light, and a new America will be built within its current dilapidated, shameful iteration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident marked the second display of white nationalist vandalism in Portland in as many months, The Oregonian reported.<\/p>\n

Graffiti left behind by Patriot Front supporters also marred a statue of York \u2014 an enslaved black member of the Lewis and Clark expedition \u2014 back in June, according to the newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n
