ATHENS \u2014\u00a0Wildfires\u00a0burned in regions across\u00a0Southern\u00a0Europe\u00a0on Monday, fueled by hot weather and strong winds, as some\u00a0northern countries cleaned\u00a0up\u00a0after\u00a0a weekend of torrential rain and flooding.<\/p>\n

In Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said firefighters had battled around 50 fires during the past 24 hours and it was likely there would be more with meteorologists warning that a further heat wave was in prospect.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to emphasize that August remains a difficult month,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is why it is important for all of us, all state services, to be on absolute alert until the firefighting period is formally over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fire service officials said negligence on farms and construction sites had been behind several incidents, many of which were in the\u00a0southern\u00a0Peloponnese region. No casualties were reported.<\/p>\n

Conditions in\u00a0Southern\u00a0Europe\u00a0were in sharp contrast to the torrential rainstorms that lashed\u00a0northern countries from Austria to Britain following the catastrophic flooding in Germany and neighboring countries last week.<\/p>\n

On the Italian island of Sardinia, firefighting planes from France and Greece reinforced local aircraft battling blazes across the island, where more than 9,884 acres (15 square miles) of forest were burned and more than 350 people evacuated.<\/p>\n

In Sicily, fires broke out near the western town of Erice.<\/p>\n

In Spain, the\u00a0northeastern region of Catalonia saw more than 1,235 acres (2 square miles) destroyed near Santa Coloma de Queralt, forcing dozens to be evacuated, although the blazes were 90% stabilized on Monday, firefighters and authorities said.<\/p>\n

In Lietor, in the central east region of Castilla-La Mancha, more than 6,177 acres (10 square miles) burned during the weekend before being brought under control, authorities said.<\/p>\n

So far this year,\u00a0wildfires\u00a0have burned across 86,486 acres (135 square miles) in Spain, still some way off the 341,005 acres (533 square miles) burned in 2012, the worst year of the past decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n
