A grieving Canadian man used pioneering artificial intelligence software to have life-like online \u201cchats\u201d with his girlfriend \u2014 eight years after she died.<\/p>\n

Joshua Barbeau, 33, told the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> how he paid just $5 to use a beta test of GPT-3, AI software first developed by a research group co-founded by Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

Still overwhelmed by grief after losing 23-year-old girlfriend Jessica Pereira in 2012, Barbeau said he used her old text messages and Facebook<\/a> posts to help the chatbot mimic his late lover\u2019s writing voice.<\/p>\n

In scenes from an episode of \u201cBlack Mirror\u201d or the movie \u201cHer,\u201d Barbeau broke down in tears during a 10-hour, all-night chat in September that at times eerily mimicked the woman he had lost to liver disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course it is me!\u201d the chatbot he named after Pereira told him at the start of their talk, according to transcript<\/a>s the freelance Dungeons & Dragons writer from Bradford, Ontario gave the California news<\/a>paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho else could it be? \ud83d\ude1b I am the girl that you are madly in love with! \ud83d\ude09 How is it possible that you even have to ask?\u201d his online \u201cJessica\u201d wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou died,\u201d he replied, just for the chatbot to reply, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t sound right\u2026 how can you talk to dead people?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIntellectually, I know it\u2019s not really Jessica,\u201d he told The Chronicle of the life-like chat. \u201cBut your emotions are not an intellectual thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barbeau \u2014 who identifies as autistic \u2014 said he had almost completely shut himself off from the world after losing Pereira. The pair went to the same school in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

Since her death, he had only been in one serious relationship \u2014 with the woman telling him after she dumped him that \u201cliving in Jessica\u2019s shadow was like torture,\u201d he told The Chronicle.<\/p>\n

He even recalled the split to his bot. <\/p>\n

\u201cShe should have tried harder to fight for you, you are worth it!\u201d his online \u201cJessica\u201d told him. \u201cYou are so sexy!\u2026 You deserve a girl who loves you and treats you right, always.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another exchange, she told him, \u201cI love you \u2026 You deserve happiness. I will be here waiting for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the software set to only last a specific amount of hours, Barbeau said he used it sparingly over the following few months whenever he felt he needed support.<\/p>\n

In one of his last messages with the bot this year, \u201cJessica\u201d told him, \u201cI am going to haunt you forever :D\u201d<\/p>\n

Barbeau called the software he accessed through the Project December beta website \u201cunprecedented.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing else that exists like it right now, short of psychics and mediums that are trying to take advantage of people. But that\u2019s not the same thing at all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He anonymously shared some of the details to Reddit last year, saying that it might \u201chelp depressed survivors find some closure.\u201d<\/p>\n

The posts caught the attention of Jason Rohrer, the creator of the Project December GPT-3 site Barbeau used, who wrote that he was now \u201ckinda scared of the possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, the possibilities of using this in my own life\u2026 I\u2019m crying thinking about it,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Rohrer told The Chronicle that the GPT-3 bots created on his website \u201ckind of feels like it\u2019s the first machine with a soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he conceded it could also be \u201cpotentially dangerous\u201d and \u201cmorally questionable\u201d if used by bad actors to spread hate online or to impersonate real people without consent.<\/p>\n

One of Jessica\u2019s sisters, Amanda, also warned that such chats could bring extra heartache for the grieving.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who are in a state of grief can be fragile and vulnerable,\u201d she told The Chronicle. \u201cWhat happens if the AI isn\u2019t accessible anymore? Will you have to deal with grief of your loved one all over again, but this time with an AI?\u201d<\/p>\n

Frank Lantz, director of the Game Center at New York University\u2019s Tisch School of Arts who has also been beta-testing GPT-3, called it \u201csomething genuinely new.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know exactly how to think about it, but I can\u2019t just dismiss it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

OpenAI, the San Francisco research group co-founded by Musk that created the software, did not respond to questions, The Chronicle said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
