Bitcoin soared 12.5% to nearly $40,000 on Monday amid speculation that Amazon plans to start accepting cryptocurrencies for payments.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin briefly surged above $39,000, its highest price since mid-June, while Ether and other digital currencies also rose.<\/p>\n

The rally followed mounting rumors about Amazon\u2019s crypto plans, triggered by last week\u2019s discovery<\/a>\u00a0of a job ad for a \u201cDigital Currency and Blockchain Product Lead\u201d at the company.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Payments Acceptance & Experience team is seeking an experienced product leader to develop Amazon\u2019s Digital Currency and Blockchain strategy and product roadmap,\u201d reads the posting<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Days later, an unnamed Amazon insider told news outlet City AM<\/a>\u00a0that the retail giant will accept Bitcoin payments \u201cby the end of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source said Amazon was also considering accepting other cryptocurrencies \u2014 and launching its own token in 2022:\n<\/p>\n

It begins with Bitcoin \u2013 this is the key first stage of this crypto project, and the directive is coming from the very top\u2026 Jeff Bezos himself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She added that Amazon has been working on the plans since 2019 and that the project \u201cis pretty much ready to roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the speculation comes to fruition, it could be a huge boost to the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies. Amazon\u2019s acceptance of Bitcoin could introduce countless new people to crypto and accelerate mainstream use of digital assets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
