Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriately enough, outside the White House \u2014 at the president\u2019s request\u2014 on a day that saw both Trump and Wallace remark on the summer swelter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to sweat,\u201d Trump cracked to Wallace at one point during the interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, we both are,\u201d Wallace replied.<\/p>\n<p>These are the highlights of the chat with the commander in chief:<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_COVID-19\"><\/span>On COVID-19<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>For much of the United States, the coronavirus pandemic has now been reduced to \u201cburning embers,\u201d Trump said, contending that new cases of the contagion are surging only because of the nation\u2019s abundance of testing.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace pointed out that new daily cases had surged from a previous peak of 36,000 in April to more than 75,000 by the end of last Thursday amid a spike of infections in Southern states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris, that\u2019s because we have great testing, because we have the best testing in the world,\u201d Trump responded. \u201cIf we tested half as much, those numbers would be down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wallace also took issue with Trump\u2019s portrayal of the plague\u2019s current state as \u201cburning embers,\u201d arguing that it is more akin to a firestorm.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing the metaphor, Trump conceded that some states are currently in \u201cflames,\u201d but he vowed to keep the nation\u2019s cases in check.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI say flames. We\u2019ll put out the flames. And we\u2019ll put out in some cases just burning embers. We also have burning embers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have embers, and we do have flames,\u201d Trump added. \u201cFlorida became more flame-like, but it\u2019s \u2014 it\u2019s going to be under control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noting that he\u2019s taken heat for his prediction that the virus would simply go away, he said, \u201cI guess everybody makes mistakes. I\u2019ll be right eventually. It\u2019s going to disappear and I\u2019ll be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_Dr_Fauci\"><\/span>On Dr. Fauci<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation\u2019s leading expert on infectious diseases and a respected member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, is a \u201cbit of an alarmist,\u201d said Trump \u2014 while insisting that they still have a \u201cvery good relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci became the focus of attacks last week when two administration officials \u2014 trade representative Peter Navarro and White House aide Dan Scavino \u2014 questioned the decisions he has made and whether he was leaking information on the federal coronavirus response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16009828\"><img alt=\"Donald Trump and Dr. Anthony Fauci\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"661\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Donald Trump and Dr. Anthony Fauci<\/span><span>AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWell, I don\u2019t know that he\u2019s a leaker,\u201d Trump told Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out, however, that Fauci has \u201cmade a few mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fauci said, \u2018Don\u2019t wear masks.\u2019 Dr. Fauci told me not to ban [<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> from] China,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI did it over and above his recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fauci then said, \u2018You saved tens of thousands of lives.\u2019 More than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_Joe_Biden\"><\/span>On Joe Biden<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Former Vice President Joe Biden won\u2019t succeed in his quest to unseat Trump in November because \u201che\u2019s mentally shot,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know why I won\u2019t lose? Because the country, in the end, they\u2019re not going to have a man who \u2014 who\u2019s shot,\u201d Trump prognosticated. \u201cHe\u2019s shot, he\u2019s mentally shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump chided Biden for his thus-far low-key campaign and accused of him simply following a teleprompter when he does surface for an appearance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t even come out of his basement. They think, \u2018Oh, this is a great campaign,\u2019\u2009\u201d Trump said. \u201cI\u2019ll then make a speech. It\u2019ll be a great speech, and some young guy starts writing, \u2018Vice President Biden said this, this, this, this,\u2019\u2009\u201d Trump continued. \u201cHe didn\u2019t say it. Joe doesn\u2019t know he\u2019s alive, OK? He doesn\u2019t know he\u2019s alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Trump stopped short of responding in the affirmative when asked by Wallace whether he believed Biden was \u201csenile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to say that,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI\u2019d say he\u2019s not competent to be president. To be president, you have to be sharp and tough and so many other things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That said, Trump expressed doubts that Biden could hold up under such an intense grilling from the press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet Biden sit through an interview like this. He\u2019ll be on the ground crying for mommy,\u201d Trump said. \u201cHe\u2019ll say \u2018Mommy, Mommy, please take me home.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_polls\"><\/span>On polls<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Trump\u2019s personal estimation of Biden notwithstanding, a new Fox News poll unveiled by Wallace showed him trailing Biden by an 8-point margin.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump \u2014 who overcame underwhelming poll results to win the 2016 presidential election \u2014 dismissed the new results as \u201cfake\u201d and predicted he would serve four more years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, I\u2019m not losing because those are fake polls,\u201d he insisted. \u201cThey were fake in 2016, and now they\u2019re even more fake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president instead said he and his re-election campaign have their own polls that show him leading the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have polls where I\u2019m leading,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a poll where we\u2019re leading in every swing state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who was elected in 2016 on his first run for office, said he doesn\u2019t like to come out on the losing end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a good loser. I don\u2019t like to lose,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t lose too often. I don\u2019t like to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wouldn\u2019t say whether he would accept the results of November\u2019s election, citing possible fraud with mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know until you see. It depends,\u201d Trump said, adding that voting by mail \u2014 which Democrats have suggested to protect people from the coronavirus \u2014 would \u201crig the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_campaign_rallies\"><\/span>On campaign rallies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Democrats are keeping schools shuttered and preventing large gatherings \u2014 like campaign rallies \u2014 amid the pandemic to undermine his chances in 2020, Trump alleged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democrats are purposely keeping their schools closed, keeping their states closed. I called Michigan. I want to have a big rally in Michigan,\u201d he told Wallace. \u201cDo you know we\u2019re not allowed to have a rally in Michigan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shutdown wasn\u2019t limited to Michigan but other potentially key swing states as well, Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know we\u2019re not allowed to have a rally in Minnesota? Do you know we\u2019re not allowed to have a rally in Nevada?\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re not allowed to have rallies in these Democrat-run states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wallace questioned whether the states weren\u2019t justified in worrying about allowing rallies with thousands of people amid a public-health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people would say, fine,\u201d Trump responded.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said that even if his campaign had proper precautions worked out, \u201cthey still wouldn\u2019t allow it. They\u2019re not allowing me to do it. So they\u2019re not allowing me to have rallies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan, Minnesota and Nevada have cumulatively seen nearly 8,000 coronavirus deaths.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16009864\"><img alt=\"Trump's June 20 rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Trump\u2019s June 20 rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma<\/span><span>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_military_bases_and_cancel_culture\"><\/span>On military bases and cancel culture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Trump threatened to mull a veto of a massive military spending package if it includes a provision that bases named after Confederate <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>s must find new monikers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might. Yeah, I might,\u201d he told Wallace, who pointed out that top military leaders backed the potential name changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care what the military says. I\u2019m supposed to make the decision,\u201d the commander in chief said. \u201cFort Bragg is a big deal. We won two world wars \u2014 nobody even knows [Confederate Army] General Bragg. We won two world wars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Defense Authorization Act sets aside $1 million to change the names of 10 bases named after Confederate soldiers. It also includes a pay hike for members of the military, a raise that Trump said they would still get if he vetoed the bill.<\/p>\n<p>But he refused to budge on the name changes at any cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are we going to rename it?\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou going to name it after the Reverend Al Sharpton? What are you going to name it, Chris? No, I\u2019m not going to go changing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump similarly weighed in on Confederate flags and the renewed push against them since the racially charged Minnesota death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people proudly had their Confederate flags they\u2019re not talking about racism. They love their flag. It represents the South. They like the South,\u201d he told Wallace. \u201cI say it\u2019s freedom of many things, but it\u2019s freedom of speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the Black Lives Matter movement is also a First Amendment matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not offended . . . by Black Lives Matter. That\u2019s freedom of speech,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know the whole thing with cancel culture \u2014 we can\u2019t cancel our whole history. We can\u2019t forget that the North and the South fought.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_nieces_tell-all\"><\/span>On niece\u2019s tell-all<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Trump blasted his niece\u2019s tell-all book about the family as \u201cstupid and so vicious\u201d \u2014 and said he was most hurt by the accusations against his parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was not exactly a family favorite,\u201d he said of Mary Trump. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have a lot of respect or like for her. I would\u2019ve never said that except she writes a book that\u2019s so stupid and so vicious, and it\u2019s a lie. My father was a great, wonderful man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the book, Mary Trump described the president\u2019s father, Fred, as a \u201chard-functioning sociopath,\u201d a characterization the commander in chief bristled at.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he was the most solid person I\u2019ve ever met. And he was a very good person. He was a very, very good person. He was strong, but he was good,\u201d the president said, calling his niece \u201cscarred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separately on Sunday, Trump took to Twitter to weigh in on recent anti-police protests in Portland, Ore., as well as the investigations into his presidency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to help Portland, not hurt it. Their leadership has, for months, lost control of the anarchists and agitators. They are missing in action. We must protect Federal property, AND OUR PEOPLE,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cThese were not merely protesters, these are the real deal!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump was defending the hard-line actions of federal agents in the city one day after a riot was declared because demonstrators torched a Portland police-union building.<\/p>\n<p>The president also repeated his allegation that both his Oval Office predecessor and 2020 challenger were conspiring against him as a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we catch Obama &#038; Biden, not to even mention the rest of their crew, SPYING on my campaign, AND NOTHING HAPPENS? I hope not!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it were the other way around, 50 years for treason.
