\n Candidates for the 2021 mayoral race blasted fellow City Hall contender Eric Adams for his \u201cdeadly\u201d guidance after a constituent followed the Brooklyn borough president\u2019s suggestion that New Yorkers settle disputes about illegal fireworks neighbor-to-neighbor instead of calling 911.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe advice of Eric Adams earlier this summer for residents to confront those setting off fireworks rather than calling the police was dumb and now deadly,\u201d Guardian Angels founder and GOP mayoral contender Curtis Sliwa told The Post.<\/p>\n

On June 21 as the city saw a surge of illegal fireworks complaints, Adams\u00a0said people should\u00a0talk to their neighbors\u00a0about the \u201cnonviolent act,\u201d rather than call the authorities and risk a \u201cheavy-handed\u201d police response.<\/p>\n

Shatavia Walls, 33, was shot dead at an East New York public housing complex on July 7, just for asking punks to move their pyrotechnics away from a children\u2019s playground \u2014 exactly how Adams told constituents to solve this summer\u2019s firecracker frenzy.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe watched the news<\/a>. Yes, she heard it,\u201d Helen Testagros, Walls\u2019 heartbroken mother, said Sunday, referring to Adams\u2019 advice. \u201cIt was probably in the back of her mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gen. Loree Sutton, who\u2019s running to replace Mayor de Blasio on the Democratic ticket, also decried Adams\u2019 advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart goes out to Shatavia Walls and her family,\u201d said Sutton, who served as the city\u2019s first commissioner of veterans services under de Blasio.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a reason police officials say, \u2018Don\u2019t take the law into your own hands.\u2019 As a former police officer, Eric Adams demonstrated exceptionally poor judgment in advising his constituents to intervene in actions that are against the law, placing individuals at risk,\u201d Sutton said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, President Trump on Monday, reacting to The Post\u2019s front-page story about Walls\u2019 killing, warned Gov. Andrew Cuomo to get a grip on crime in New York or he\u2019ll send in the feds.<\/p>\n

And billionaire grocer John Catsimatidis, who\u2019s eyeing another run for mayor, also mourned the tragic incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a horrible situation. The woman didn\u2019t deserve to die,\u201d Catsimatidis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Curtis did the right thing by calling Adams out,\u201d Catsimatidis said about his fellow GOP contender.<\/p>\n

Reps for two other leading Democratic hopefuls, City Comptroller Scott Stringer and Council Speaker Corey Johnson, either declined to comment or did not immedia<\/a>tely provide a response.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
