PARIS \u2013 \u201cRobot, stand up\u201d \u2013 Oscar Constanza, 16, gives the order and slowly but surely a large frame strapp<\/a>ed to his body lifts him up and he starts\u00a0walking.<\/p>\n

Fastened to his shoulders, chest, waist, knees and feet, the\u00a0exoskeleton\u00a0allows Oscar \u2013 who has a genetic neurological condition that means his nerves do not send enough signals to his legs \u2013 to\u00a0walk\u00a0across the room and turn around.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore, I needed someone to\u00a0help\u00a0me\u00a0walk\u00a0\u2026 this makes me feel independent,\u201d said Oscar, as his\u00a0father\u00a0Jean-Louis Constanza, one of the co-founders of the company that makes the\u00a0exoskeleton, looks on.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day Oscar said to me: \u2018dad, you\u2019re a robotic engineer, why don\u2019t you make a robot that would allow us to\u00a0walk?’\u201d his\u00a0father\u00a0recalls, speaking at the company Wandercraft\u2019s headquarters in Paris.<\/p>\n

\u201cTen years from now, there will be no, or far fewer,\u00a0wheelchairs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Other companies across the world are also manufacturing\u00a0exoskeletons, competing to make them as light and usable as possible. Some are focused on\u00a0helping disabled people\u00a0walk, others on a series<\/a> of applications, including making standing less tiring for factory workers.<\/p>\n

Wandercraft\u2019s\u00a0exoskeleton, an outer frame that supports but also simulates body movement, has been sold to dozens of hospitals in France, Luxembourg and the United States, for about $176,000 apiece, Constanza said.<\/p>\n

It cannot yet be bought by private individuals for everyday use \u2013 that is the next stage the company is working on. A personal skeleton would need to be much lighter, Wandercraft engineers said.<\/p>\n

Just outside Paris, 33-year-old Kevin Piette, who lost the ability to\u00a0walk\u00a0in a bike accident 10 years ago, tries one on,\u00a0walking around his flat, remote controller in hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the end it\u2019s quite similar: instead of having the information going from the brain to the legs, it goes from the remote controller to the legs,\u201d he said, before making his dinner and\u00a0walking with it from the kitchen to the living room.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
