Word broke today that <strong>Judd Hirsch<\/strong> was joining the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gaBy2y2jHi?amp=1\">cast of the new Steven Spielberg movie<\/a>, and while some people probably im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely associate Hirsch with\u00a0<em>Taxi<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Independence Day<\/em>, the first thing I think of is\u00a0<strong><em>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/em><\/strong>, AKA\u00a0<strong><em>The Halloween That Almost Wasn\u2019t<\/em><\/strong>. It\u2019s true, I wouldn\u2019t lie about Dracula. Because 1979 was the year ABC premiered\u00a0<em>The Halloween That Almost Wasn\u2019t<\/em>, a half-hour special that had its title changed to\u00a0<em>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/em>\u00a0when it was later released on VHS. And honestly, that\u2019s for the best, because\u00a0<em>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/em> is a much, much better title.<\/p>\n<p>When I was a kid, I was\u00a0<em>very<\/em> into monsters, especially the Universal Monsters. I mean, technically, I\u2019m still very into them, but the years have dulled my capacity for excitement and enjoyment, so I can now only muster up a faint trace of enthusiasm. But back in the early \u201990s, monsters were one of the few things I cared about (the other things I cared about were ghosts, <em>Goosebumps<\/em> and Stephen King books,\u00a0McDonald\u2019s fries, and having absolutely no friends). I consumed every and any bit of monster\/horror-related media I could get my hands on, and if that media was\u00a0<em>also<\/em> about Halloween in some way, I was in heaven.<\/p>\n<p>So when I spotted a copy of the Halloween special\u00a0<em>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/em> on the shelf at my local video store, I turned into the human version of that emoji with hearts for eyes. I don\u2019t remember the name of the video store \u2013 it wasn\u2019t a Blockbuster or a Hollywood Video. Hell, it wasn\u2019t even a West Coast Video. It was just some cheapo place that specialized in renting out porn <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> with titles like\u00a0<em>Ass to the Future<\/em><em>\u00a0Part 3<\/em>. But I was too young to care about porn, and besides, I couldn\u2019t get to it \u2013 it was behind an impenetrable fortress, AKA a ratty-looking curtain. I guess I\u00a0<em>could<\/em> have pulled back that curtain if I wanted to, but the sound it would\u2019ve made against the metal curtain rod surely would\u2019ve alerted everyone in the store, and a siren would probably start going off, and I would immediately be str<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed into an electric chair for my crimes.<\/p>\n<p>But none of that was on my mind. Instead, I cared more about the non-porn titles, which were scant but present just to keep up appearances. And one of those titles was\u00a0<em>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/em>. Just the name \u201cDracula\u201d was enough to rev up my little fat boy heart, so I insisted on renting what was sure to be a masterpiece.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/drac-saved-the-world.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-688273\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/drac-saved-the-world-700x321.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/drac-saved-the-world-700x321.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/drac-saved-the-world-360x165.jpg 360w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/drac-saved-the-world-768x352.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/drac-saved-the-world.jpg 948w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Night_Dracula_Saved_the_World\"><\/span><strong>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 --><em>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/em> has your standard premise: it\u2019s Halloween, and Dracula and all his monster buddies want to boogie on down \u2013 you\u2019ve seen that shit before, am I right? Typical! But wait, there\u2019s a twist. While Drac\u2019s BFFs the Frankenstein Monster (<strong>John Schuck<\/strong>), The Wolfman (<strong>Jack Riley<\/strong>), The Mummy (<strong>Robert Fitch<\/strong>),\u00a0Zabaar the Zombie (who???) (<strong>Josip Elic<\/strong>), and Igor (<strong>Henry Gibson<\/strong>), who is kind of like Dracula\u2019s live-in abused boyfriend here, are all very pro-Halloween, there\u2019s a rumor going around that Halloween may end <em>forever<\/em>. Dracula learns of this rumor from the local <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, because I guess it was a very slow news day.<\/p>\n<p>Drac is\u00a0<em>outraged<\/em> when he hears that he\u2019s being blamed for the approaching end of Halloween. So he summons all his monster friends over, and they all show up and have their own little comedic introductions. Everyone is clueless about what\u2019s going on \u2013 except one lone figure. That would be The Witch (<strong>Mariette Hartley<\/strong>), who reveals that it was she who has been spreading rumors about Halloween being canceled forever.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because she\u2019s fed up, god damn it! The Witch says she\u2019s tired of being mocked for her ugly looks, and she\u2019s had enough of this whole damn spooky holiday. This is a big problem, because if The Witch doesn\u2019t fly her broom over the moon, Halloween can\u2019t officially happen (look it up, it\u2019s in <em>The Bible<\/em>). The Witch goes on the run, and Dracula and his bumbling monster boys have to convince her to change her mind. Spoiler-alert: The Witch eventually relents when two whiny kids tell her about the true meaning of Halloween or some such bullshit.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t matter. All that matters is that the movie wraps up with everyone getting what they want. At that point, Dracula suddenly pulls off his cape to reveal he\u2019s dressed exactly like John Travolta in\u00a0<em>Saturday Night Fever<\/em>. The Witch then transforms from a generic ugly witch into a hot dame, and she and Dracula disco dance the night away. And really, isn\u2019t that what Halloween is all about? With his huge collared cape, his shoe polish widow\u2019s peak, and his questionable Bela Lugosi accent, Hirsch makes for a fine Drac. He may not be Lugosi, or Christopher Lee, or Frank Langella, or the greatest Dracula of them all, Gerard Butler. But he\u2019s having fun, damn it! And so was I.<\/p>\n<p>I ate every last frame of\u00a0<em>The Night Dracula Saved the World\u00a0<\/em>up. I loved it so much that I told my parents I had \u201clost\u201d the VHS tape, when really I just stashed it under my bed. My parents were then forced to buy the tape from the sleazy video store, and since this was the 1990s, the cost of the tape was somewhere around $100. But honestly, it was worth it. Probably not for my parents, who were not exactly flush with money. But it was definitely worth it for me, because I didn\u2019t have to pay a dime and I got to keep the tape.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Night Dracula Saved the World<\/em> isn\u2019t legally streaming anywhere at the moment. You can buy a $95 VHS tape on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Night-Dracula-Halloween-Almost-Hirsch\/dp\/B0045MY654\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=35QV7SWD865QA&amp;dchild=1&amp;keywords=the+night+dracula+saved+the+world&amp;qid=1627409599&amp;sprefix=the+night+dracula+saved%2Caps%2C157&amp;sr=8-1\">Amazon<\/a> if you want,\u00a0<em>or<\/em> you can watch a poor-quality bootleg on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8pMWK10SJX0&amp;t=69s&amp;pp=sAQA\">YouTube<\/a>.
