A former supervisor for security operations at eBay was sentenced on 18 months in prison for his role in a cyberstalking campaign that targeted a Massachusetts couple whose online news<\/a>letter was viewed as critical of the e-commerce company.<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors in Boston said Philip Cooke, a retired police captain in Santa Clara, Calif., and other employees participated in a scheme to harass the couple through Twitter<\/a> and by sending them disturbing packages, including live cockroaches.<\/p>\n

US District Judge Allison Burroughs called the employees\u2019 actions \u201creally abominable\u201d as she sentenced Cooke, who must also serve a year of home detention and pay a $15,000 fine.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost unfathomable to me,\u201d Burroughs said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure if I saw it on television I would find it believable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both of the victims, David and Ina Steiner, spoke in court, describing to the judge a bizarre, nightmarish ordeal that left them afraid to leave their home in Natick, Mass., and concerned for their safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were terrified,\u201d Ina Steiner said.<\/p>\n

Cooke, a former supervisor of security operations at eBay\u2019s European and Asian offices, was the first of seven former eBay workers who have been charged in the case to be sentenced. Four others have also pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said Cooke participated in an August 2019 planning meeting in which eBay employees discussed targeting the couple with threatening messages, unwanted deliveries like a bloody Halloween pig mask, and covert surveillance.<\/p>\n

They did so after two top executives, including former CEO Devin Wenig, expressed frustration with the newsletter, EcommerceBytes, according to prosecutors and a lawsuit the couple filed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said Wenig texted the other executive after the newsletter\u2019s editor published an article about eBay, saying it was time to \u201ctake her down.\u201d Wenig was never charged and has denied knowing about the scheme.<\/p>\n

Cooke, in court, said he should have sought to prevent what became \u201chorrific behavior to please the boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s crystal clear this was all wrong from start to finish,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
