Night Shyamalan<\/strong>\u2018s hit 2016 thriller, had a whopper of a twist at the end. And while we normally try to avoid giving away twists on this here site, I think at this point everyone knows the deal \u2013 even if you didn\u2019t see\u00a0<em>Split<\/em>. After all,<em> Split<\/em> was followed by\u00a0<strong><em>Glass<\/em><\/strong>, a movie that was a direct continuation of\u00a0<em>Split<\/em>\u2018s big twist ending. But back before\u00a0<em>Split<\/em> arrived, no one had any idea what was coming \u2013 not even the studio execs, who were completely caught off guard by the twist when Shyamalan showed them the movie for the very first time.\u00a0<span id=\"more-688372\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re still reading at this point, you\u2019re not worried about spoilers. So here\u2019s the deal:\u00a0<em>Split<\/em> ends with the reveal that the film is set in the same universe as\u00a0<strong><em>Unbreakable<\/em><\/strong>, M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s great, broody 2000 take on superheroes. <strong>Bruce Willis<\/strong> is shown as his\u00a0<em>Unbreakable<\/em> character David Dunn, and characters near him are heard talking about events from that film. It was something no one really saw coming, especially since\u00a0<em>Split<\/em> is such a different movie than\u00a0<em>Unbreakable<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Most folks managed to keep\u00a0<em>Split<\/em>\u2018s twist a secret at first, and that includes Shyamalan himself. While <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing on the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemablend.com\/news\/2570902\/m-night-shyamalan-hid-one-twist-from-studio-left-executives-flummoxed-bruce-willis\">ReelBlend podcast<\/a>\u00a0(via <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2021\/07\/m-night-shyamalan-hid-split-twist-studio-1234653827\/\">IndieWire<\/a>), the director revealed that he didn\u2019t even tell the execs at Universal about the twist before they screened the movie. This, understandably, could\u2019ve caused some issues. Because while\u00a0<em>Split<\/em> was set up at Universal,\u00a0<em>Unbreakable\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 and its characters \u2013 are owned by Disney (the film was distributed by Disney\u2019s\u00a0Buena Vista Pictures Distribution brand).<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->\u201cI go to the Universal Studios chairman, (the) marketing team, everyone\u2019s in the theater. We pull down the lights and we play them <em>Split<\/em>,\u201d Shyamalan said. \u201cThey don\u2019t know the ending that they\u2019re watching. They didn\u2019t even know I shot it, because I didn\u2019t even send them the dallies of that (scene). The lights go down. They watch the whole movie of <em>Split<\/em>. Then this scene comes on, and they\u2019re completely flummoxed. They look at me, and they\u2019re like, \u2018What are you saying? That\u2019s a Disney movie!\u2019 [Laughs] And I go, \u2018It\u2019s all good. We have the permission to do it!\u2019 Can you imagine? You are the chairman of the studio, and the guy shows you that it\u2019s a sequel to a movie from another studio?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh, M. In fact, it originally wasn\u2019t even supposed to be in the film. \u201cWhen I wrote that movie, I didn\u2019t put the end scene on. I handed it to the studio without that end scene on. We shot it without that end scene on. We previewed it without that end scene on,\u201d Shyamalan says. \u201cAnd then\u2026I said, \u2018Let\u2019s just go for it.\u2019 Lemme call Bruce and say, \u2018Hey dude, would you just come to Philly for, like, three hours and shoot this thing for me?\u2019 And he was like, \u2018Why, what?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Well, I did this movie, and it\u2019s kind of in the <em>Unbreakable<\/em> world. I don\u2019t know if we\u2019ll ever shoot a sequel. Do you just want to just come for three hours, bro?\u2019 And he was like, \u2018Yeah, yeah. I\u2019ll come.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Shyamalan and Willis did get to make their\u00a0<em>Unbreakable<\/em> sequel, sort of, with\u00a0<em>Glass<\/em>. I\u2019m of the humble opinion that they probably shouldn\u2019t have done that, because I don\u2019t care for\u00a0<em>Glass<\/em> at all.
