What is an epic failure?<\/p>\n

LaVar Burton\u2019s \u201cJeopardy!\u201d guest hosting debut ushered in a new low on the famed trivia game<\/a> show.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s episode saw contestant Patrick Pearce record the lowest score in the program\u2019s history \u2014 ending \u201cDouble Jeopardy\u201d with -$7,400, according to Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Burton, who has been a fan favorite to take over as host of the show following the death of Alex Trebek, had his first app<\/a>earance somewhat overshadowed by Pearce\u2019s unprecedented breakdown.<\/p>\n

Pearce ended the first round of the game in the black with $200, but tanked in the next, making him ineligible for \u201cFinal Jeopardy,\u201d and replacing Stephanie Hull\u2019s -$6,800 2015 effort in the history books, the article said.<\/p>\n

Matt Amodio of New Haven, Connecticut, capitalized on the California man\u2019s poor performance to reportedly extend his four-day winning streak to $122,400.<\/p>\n

The historic loss came as many excited fans tuned in to see the former \u201cReading Rainbow\u201d star audition for the role many believed he is well suited for.<\/p>\n

\u201cOmg I never watch #Jeopardy. But tuned in last night to see Burton and wow what a bust,\u201d one person tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait, hold up. Did I (and probably a whole lotta other folks) just tune in for the first time in a LONG time to watch the lowest recorded score in #Jeopardy history? If so, now I feel even worse for him,\u201d another said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Burton has long campaigned to be made a permanent host, and more than a quarter-million fans have signed a petition<\/a> calling on him to fill Trebek\u2019s shoes.<\/p>\n

\u201c[In] 2013 I tweeted for the first time how much I would love to have that job when Alex retired,\u201d Burton said on \u201cThe View\u201d<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than anything, I am eager to put my skills up against those of anyone else in contention and then let the chips fall where they may.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cStar Trek: The\u00a0Next Generation\u201d actor continued his pitch to producers at the start of Monday\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n

Trebek hosted the show from 1984 until his death in November 2020. Art Fleming led \u201cJeopardy!\u201d in the 1960s and 1970s and is the show\u2019s only other full-time host.<\/p>\n

Burton will continue guest-hosting through Friday, according to the show\u2019s website<\/a>.\n <\/div>\n
