After all, is there any real reason for them to do the contrary?<\/p>\n<p>Well, how about blowing the doors off in terms of audience expectations? Speaking (via <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalspy.com\/tv\/a37138818\/doctor-who-season-13-storyline-chris-chibnall\/\">Digital Spy<\/a>) via the show\u2019s recent Comic-Con presentation, showrunner Chris Chibnall made it clear that they are taking a\u00a0<em>big\u00a0<\/em>risk with season 13, telling one continuous story as opposed to a number of smaller, standalone ones:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">It\u2019s very much not a business as usual time, and I think the challenges of getting the show up and running\u2026 there were two ways we could go.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cYou could go, \u2018We\u2019re just going to do lots and lots of tiny episodes in one room with no monsters.\u2019 Or we can throw down the gauntlet and say, \u2018We\u2019re gonna do the biggest story we\u2019ve ever done, and we\u2019re going to go to all kinds of different places, and have all different characters and monsters, and it\u2019s all gonna be part of a bigger whole\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>If you think about the totality of\u00a0<em>Doctor Who,\u00a0<\/em>one of its real landmarks is telling some of these standalone arcs \u2014 yet, the past few years we\u2019ve seen more and more two-part stories. Maybe we\u2019ve been subtly building towards this for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>As for whether or not it\u2019s the right move for the writers to move in this direction, that depends heavily on the story itself. If Chibnall has a fantastically-creative plot that combines elements that Whovians love so much, it could be considered one of the most brilliant moves in the show\u2019s history. The problem is that\u00a0<em>Doctor Who\u00a0<\/em>has long been a feast-or-famine show where so episodes are fantastic, and some leave a lot to be desired.
