Democratic mayoral candidate Eric Adams declared his opposition to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s socialist \u201cmovement\u201d \u2014 which includes defunding the police and shuttering prisons \u2014 during a fundraiser co-hosted by a Republican member of the City Council, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

A video recording of Adams\u2019 speech shows him telling supporters that the battle he faced wasn\u2019t with his political rivals in the Nov. 2 election, but with the Democratic Socialists of America.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m no longer running against candidates. I\u2019m running against a movement. All across the country, the DSA socialists are mobilizing to stop Eric Adams,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey realize that if I\u2019m successful, we\u2019re going to start the process of regaining control of our cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remarks sparked cheers and app<\/a>lause from attendees at the Monday night event in Douglaston, Queens.<\/p>\n

Although Adams \u2014 a former NYPD captain whose campaign hinges on restoring public safety \u2014 didn\u2019t mention Ocasio-Cortez (D-The Bronx, Queens) by name, the DSA openly acknowledges her as its \u201cforemost socialist superstar.\u201d<\/p>\n

A page on its website<\/a> \u2014 which shows Ocasio-Cortez marching with a raised fist \u2014 also says she \u201cinspired up to 10,000 people to join\u201d the nonprofit organization.<\/p>\n

Adams\u2019 speech came less than two weeks after a news<\/a> conference at which he said he wanted to reclaim the mantle of \u201cbeing progressive\u201d from Democrats who \u201chijacked\u201d it but \u201cdo not have a track record of putting in place real progressive changes.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, Adams \u2014 a former state senator and Brooklyn\u2019s outgoing borough president \u2014 told donors that he wanted to transcend partisan politics and that he was seeking votes from New Yorkers regardless of party affiliation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to let parties get in the way of this party called New York City,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Adams added: \u201cThose of you in the room who are Republicans, tell your Republican friends to vote for Eric Adams. Independents, Democrats, no matter who you are \u2014 we are wearing the \u2018Team New York\u2019 jersey on this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams also pledged to revive the city\u2019s toughness and competitive spirit following the lockdowns forced by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have become soft. People don\u2019t even want to go back to work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a pivotal moment for us. If we don\u2019t get our act together, China is going to show us how to run our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he said the city had \u201csurrendered\u201d to crime, mayhem and ineffective government.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t believe you can go to Times Square and not have a 3 -year-old child shot. You don\u2019t believe you take the subway system without having someone\u2026with mental health crises, who did not get the services they deserve, shove you on the subway track,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t believe you can go to the Department of Buildings and have a damn permit issued so you can open your restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams added, to applause, \u201cYou don\u2019t believe. But I\u2019ll be damned \u2014 you\u2019re going to start believing when I became the mayor of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams faces Republican candidate and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, who he mistakenly referred to as \u201cEric Sliwa,\u201d as well as Conservative Party candidate Bill Pepitone, a retired NYPD cop and nephew of former Yankees baseball player Joe Pepitone.<\/p>\n

Adams apparently misspoke when he said, \u201cThere\u2019s a DSA candidate that\u2019s running for mayor,\u201d as the group doesn\u2019t have a ballot line and hasn\u2019t endorsed anyone.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Adams campaign spokesman said, \u201cHe was talking about the dynamics of the general<\/a> election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams also said that he\u2019s been dreaming of leading the city since he was a cop in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to Deputy Mayor Bill Lynch at the time. I said, `I can turn around this city,’\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I put myself on the right path while I wore a bullet-proof vest protecting the children and families of this city. I crafted a plan to become the chief executive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s poolside fundraiser took place at the home of developer Carl Mattone and was co-hosted by Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Queens), lobbyist William Driscoll and architect Gerry Caliendo.<\/p>\n

Urlich is set to co-host another fundraiser for Adams on Aug. 8 at the Russo\u2019s on the Bay catering hall in Queens.<\/p>\n

In an interview, Ulrich predicted that Adams would \u201cbe a great mayor\u201d and the most charismatic since the late Mayor Ed Koch, who served three terms, from 1978 to 1989, and was famed for asking New Yorkers, \u201cHow\u2019m I doin\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been a fan of Eric Adams for a long time. He\u2019s going to be a great mayor,\u201d Ulrich said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEric is a common-sense guy. Other candidates ran for mayor. He wants to be mayor. He wants to be a larger-than-life mayor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither Ocasio-Cortez, the DSA nor Sliwa immediately returned requests for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
