However, an epidemic of avian malaria transmitted by \u201cnon-native\u201d mosquitos killed five of them. The remaining two were assumed dead \u2014 until this Wednesday, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/hawaii\/article\/Rare-Hawaiian-bird-thought-dead-re-emerges-kiwikiu-16341202.php\">SFGate reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources researcher Zach Pezzillo was at the Haleakal\u0101 volcano-based reserve when his keen ear picked up a very specific bird song in the distance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI first heard what I thought might be a distant kiwikiu song,\u201d Pezzillo said in a statement, according to SFGate. \u201cIt then sang about ten times across a gulch in some koa trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The creature, which birders thought had perished in the bird epidemic or the years since, then began acquiring various items, all while continuing its ditty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt dropped down into some kolea trees where it spent the next twenty minutes calling and actively foraging through the berries, bark and leaves,\u201d he said. Taking a closer look, Pezzillo was able to confirm that the bird was one of the two lost Maui Parrotbill\u2019s thanks to a banded mark on its leg.<\/p>\n<p>That the chirping fellow is still alive and kicking is a miracle, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bird has been exposed to disease, as the others were, and has somehow persevered,\u201d said Dr. Hanna Moucne of the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its apparent survival offers hope for the survival of other similar species in the reserve\u2019s specific environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an amazing sign of hope for the species as we still may have time to save them\u2026This is a hopeful sign that a population of kiwikiu and other native forest birds could survive in restored landscapes in the future, especially without mosquitoes and disease,\u201d Moucne said.\u00a0\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
