\n A Long Island Carvel manger says he was fired for refusing to take a $10 bill from a sweating and coughing customer who wasn\u2019t wearing a mask.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not right that I can be fired for following rules,\u201d manager Thomas DeSarle told the media<\/a> at a press conference Monday. \u201cYou get fired for not following rules. You know, it just doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old Glen Cove man said on the evening of July 11 a customer came into the store sweating and coughing profusely and he wasn\u2019t wearing a mask \u2014 despite signs on the store\u2019s door saying masks and social distancing are mandatory.<\/p>\n

DeSarle saw the customer cough \u201call over his hands\u201d and said he hoped the man was going to pay with a credit card because than there would be no contact or risk of passing germs to each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard the bell ring [and] walked out to a customer who was, was coughing very loudly,\u201d DeSarle said. \u201cNot a cough just to clear your throat, but a cough where he actually sounded sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked him sir, \u2018Do you have a mask?\u2019 He said no. We offered him a mask, and he just continued to give his order that he wanted a small vanilla ice cream,\u201d DeSarle continued.<\/p>\n

And instead of paying with a credit card as DeSarle hoped he would, \u201cit\u2019s that disgusting $10 wet bill he pulled out. What was I supposed to do?\u201d DeSarle said.<\/p>\n

His lawyer noted that the customer was handling the bill with the same hand he was coughing in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018sorry sir, I cannot take it.\u2019 I said, \u2018you need to pay with a credit card, or we can\u2019t serve you,\u201d DeSarle recounted<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just kept on trying to hand me the money. [He] just kept on saying \u2018here take my money, take my money.’\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSarle said he was scared for his health after the man came in coughing and wouldn\u2019t have taken the wet bill in normal times let alone during the coronvirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how this disease works. I have no idea,\u201d the manager said.<\/span><\/p>\n

DeSarle went back to speak with co-owner Annie Chen to tell her he wouldn\u2019t take the wet money but Chen ended up serving the customer herself and sending DeSarle home, he said.<\/p>\n

The pair patched things up the next day but DeSarle told Chen if a similar situation presented itself he wouldn\u2019t serve the customer, prompting her to fire him Monday July 13, he claimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told if I cannot serve customers in the store without masks, I cannot no longer work here,\u201d DeSarle said.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Chen has] been allowing customers in the store for the last couple of weeks without masks,\u201d DeSarle alleged adding that most maskless customers would take the masks that the store offered them and some would just walk out.<\/p>\n

People must wear face masks in public places when they are unable to social distance under Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s executive order.<\/p>\n

DeSarle had been working 50-hour work weeks since the business opened back up in the wake of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is about employees feeling comfortable at work, and employers understanding that profits should never come before employee safety,\u201d DeSarle\u2019s lawyer Jon Bell told the media noting they are contemplating whether to file a lawsuit against the company.<\/p>\n

Chen deferred comment to the corporate office. Corporate did not immediately return a request for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
