“#COVID vaccine mandated for NY state workers \u2014 or face weekly tests<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

State government workers will soon have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or undergo regular testing \u2014 and vaccinations will be mandatory for frontline workers in state-run hospitals, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Negotiations with government labor unions are underway \u201cto implement this program quickly and fairly\u201d by Labor Day, Cuomo said.<\/p>\n

Cuomo also urged private businesses to \u201cbring your employees back from remote work\u201d immedia<\/a>tely after the holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone has to be back to the office,\u201d he said. \u201cDo it safely and smartly \u2026 We need that volume to support the restaurants, the shops and the services.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo further suggested that businesses could \u201cdo their part\u201d to help overcome \u201cvaccine hesitancy\u201d by allowing \u201conly vaccinated people\u201d as workers and customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can argue it\u2019s a good business practice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I want to go to a safe restaurant. I want to go to a safe theater. I want to go to a safe bar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo pointed to Manhattan\u2019s famed Radio City Music Hall as the \u201cfirst main venue\u201d in the state to admit only vaccinated patrons.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore businesses should do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be an incentive for more people to get the vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo said that \u201cby law,\u201d employers have the authority to require their workers be vaccinated, even though the Federal Drug Administration has yet to grant final app<\/a>roval for the shots.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking the first major step down this road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Workers who don\u2019t want to get vaccinated will have to be tested \u201cregularly,\u201d Cuomo said, but he didn\u2019t specify how often that meant.<\/p>\n

During remarks at a virtual meeting of the Association for a Better New York, Cuomo also said there would be no testing option available for \u201cpatient-facing\u201d workers in state-run hospitals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re saying, in state hospitals where the state is the employer, the frontline workers must be vaccinated. Period,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cuomo\u2019s announcement came two days after Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was expanding the city\u2019s vaccination-or-testing rule to cover the entire municipal workforce.<\/p>\n

De Blasio previously ordered public hospital and clinic workers to get inoculated or undergo weekly tests for the coronavirus.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
