Google is pushing back its return to the office until at least October and will require employees to be vaccinated, the company said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post<\/a> that workers who return to the company\u2019s offices must be vaccinated, with exemptions for \u201cmedical or other protected reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

While other big tech companies have encouraged employees to get vaccinated, Google is the first to mandate shots.<\/p>\n

Pichai added that while some of Google\u2019s 144,000 employees around the world have already returned to offices on a voluntary basis, none will be required to report in person until at least October 18.<\/p>\n

That deadline could be pushed back further \u2014 and employees will have at least 30 days\u2019 notice before they will be required to return. Workers with unspecified \u201cspecial circumstances\u201d will be able to app<\/a>ly to work from home through the end of 2021.<\/p>\n

The news<\/a> comes amid surging coronavirus cases that prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to recommend yesterday that vaccinated Americans in high-risk areas \u2014 including New York City \u2014 wear masks indoors.<\/p>\n

That development is causing companies across industries to rethink their plans for in-person this fall.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s announcement comes one week after Apple made a similar move by pushing back the company\u2019s return-to-office date from September to at least October.<\/p>\n

Other tech companies including\u00a0Twitter\u00a0and Facebook<\/a> have said many employees are welcome to work remotely forever \u2014 although\u00a0Facebook plans to slash pay for employees\u00a0who leave Silicon Valley for cheaper areas.<\/p>\n

After the pandemic, Google expects most employees to return to in-person work at least three days per week.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
