He\u2019s making his feature directorial debut later this year with a movie adaptation of\u00a0<em>Tick, Tick\u2026Boom!<\/em>. And he also wrote the original songs for <em>Encanto<\/em>, a new Disney animated musical coming out in November. But next up is\u00a0<em><strong>Vivo<\/strong><\/em>, a new animated musical from Sony Pictures Animation which features original songs from Miranda and marks the first time he lends his voice to the lead character of an animated film.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything we learned about the making of <em>Vivo<\/em> during a recent press day for the new movie.<span id=\"more-681488\"><\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-682800 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-young-700x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-young.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-young-360x154.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Vivo\"><\/span>What is Vivo?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Vivo<\/em> is the latest movie from Sony Pictures Animation, the studio that brought you films like <em>Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em> and <em>The Mitchells vs. The Machines<\/em>. It\u2019s going to be tough for anything to top the creativity on display in <em>Spider-Verse<\/em>, but <em>Vivo<\/em> continues to push the visual envelope for the company and take chances by playing with multiple animation styles throughout. It was originally intended for a theatrical release, but instead Sony decided to license it to Netflix due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The story centers on a suave, music-loving kinkajou named Vivo, who plays music every day in a gorgeous Havana square with his beloved owner\/best friend Andr\u00e9s (<strong>Juan de Marcos<\/strong>). Andr\u00e9s receives a letter from his former musical partner who has since become a famous singer (<strong>Gloria Estefan<\/strong>), inviting him to come to her final concert in Miami, Florida. Vivo, who at first is reluctant to alter his daily routine, eventually embraces the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing to Miami so he can give the diva a special song Andr\u00e9s wrote for her decades earlier. But to get there, Vivo needs the help of Gabi (<strong>Ynairaly Simo<\/strong>), an energetic young girl whose chaotic sense of style clashes with Vivo\u2019s more uptight personality.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-682801 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-BTS-700x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-BTS.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-BTS-360x154.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_the_Metaphorical_Band_Back_Together\"><\/span>Getting the (Metaphorical) Band Back Together<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>During a recent virtual press event hosted by Netflix, we learned that <strong>Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/strong>\u00a0originally wrote the songs for <em>Vivo<\/em> back in 2009, but it wasn\u2019t until years later that he\u2019d be joined on the film by frequent collaborators <strong>Alex Lacamoire<\/strong> (<em>Hamilton<\/em>), who composed the score and is the executive music producer, and <strong>Quiara Alegria Hudes<\/strong>, who co-wrote the stage version of\u00a0<em>In the Heights<\/em>. In 2016, director <strong>Kirk DeMicco<\/strong> (<em>The Croods<\/em>) came on board, but the actual production took place from February 2020 through February 2021.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->DeMicco praised Miranda\u2019s ability to come at this project as a songwriter\/storyteller as well as the lead actor, because it meant he occasionally had to kill his own darlings in order to improve the bigger picture of the movie. The example DeMicco gave was for a song called \u201cKeep the Beat,\u201d which features Vivo and Gabi slowly becoming friends on a detour in the Everglades. That scene had existed for two years as spoken dialogue between the two characters, but during last summer\u2019s lockdown, Miranda realized that he could revamp the bones of the scene into a new song, so he scr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed the work he had done as an actor to perfect the vocal aspects of his performance in that stretch. Now the film is better off because of that decision.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-682799 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-concept-art-700x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-concept-art.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-concept-art-360x154.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Creating_the_Characters\"><\/span>Creating the Characters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hudes uses words like \u201crefined,\u201d \u201csuave,\u201d \u201ccontrolled,\u201d and \u201cpanache\u201d to describe Vivo, a dynamic street performer who has settled into a groove with his partner and is shaken out of his comfort zone as this story gets underway. DeMicco says the filmmakers wanted \u201cto find a really cool new version of an aspirational female character\u201d to travel with Vivo on his quest to deliver the song, so Hudes began cooking up the idea of Gabi, who is based in part on her younger sister. The siblings spent time watching Disney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> like <em>Beauty and the Beast<\/em> and <em>The Little Mermaid<\/em> when they were growing up, but Hudes says the heroines of those stories were aspirational figures, but didn\u2019t exactly give her younger sister the type of representation she was hoping to see on screen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey kind of showed her that her pudginess, which she used to think was divine and awesome, was maybe not so aspirational,\u201d Hudes explained. \u201cSo, the opportunity to take these classy, refined Cuban musicians, and throw them in with this diaspora, Key West, Floridian agent of brilliant chaos known as Gabi was really exciting to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas Vivo is all about precision and control, Gabi is described with words like \u201cspunk,\u201d \u201cpizzaz,\u201d and \u201cwildness.\u201d \u201cI was really excited to write a wild girl,\u201d Hudes said. \u201cI feel like a lot of the girl characters that I iconically grew up with in fairytales and stuff were dealing with being good girls, and dealing with being nice. And I wanted Gabi to not be dealing with that.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_3 --><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeMicco and Hudes looked at <em>Planes, Trains, and Automobiles<\/em> as a model for the type of storytelling they were looking to emulate: one in which \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you have to take a journey with someone who\u2019s really different from you and really irks you.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s the time you put in where you find the commonalities that exist despite your differences, and that you also find freedom in those differences and in those clashes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-682798 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-color-palate-700x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-color-palate.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Vivo-color-palate-360x154.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crafting_the_Look\"><\/span>Crafting the Look<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We also heard from production designer\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Carlos Zaragoza<\/strong> and art director\u00a0<strong>Wendell Dalit<\/strong> about how the movie\u2019s aesthetic was developed. Zaragoza had three main sources of inspiration after his first conversation with DeMicco: the first was finding a musicality to the film\u2019s architecture, the second was vintage travel posters from the \u201950s and \u201960s, and the third was a juxtaposition between classic and contemporary, as embodied in the dynamic between Vivo and Gabi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For Dalit and his team, attempting to translate the vibe of a simple graphic travel poster in 3D proved easier said than done.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He explained that they \u201cdeveloped a tool that distorted the background with a brush stroking technique which helped to give our sets the feeling that they are a hand painted backdrop, much like you would see in musical theater.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Vivo<\/em> also strove for authenticity wherever possible, from hiring the Cuban-American and Miami-raised Alex Lacamoire to infuse the score with the proper musical flavors, to capturing the essence of the locations while still giving them a heightened look that fits this story.
