“#Texas Deputy AG Aaron Reitz apologizes for insulting Simone Biles<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Texas Deputy Attorney General<\/a> Aaron Reitz is apologizing for calling Simone Biles a \u201cnational embarrassment\u201d following her withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental health.<\/p>\n

In a since-deleted tweet, Reitz on Tuesday called the four-time Olympic gold medalist a \u201cselfish, childish national embarrassment\u201d while retweeting video of former US Olympian Kerri Strug competing at the 1996 game<\/a>s in Atlanta with a severely injured ankle.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a moment of frustration and disapp<\/a>ointment, I opined on subjects for which I am not adequately versed,\u201d Reitz said in a statement<\/a> later Wednesday. \u201cThat was an error. I can\u2019t imagine what Simone Biles is going through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reitz went on to call Biles, 24, a \u201ctrue patriot\u201d and one of the \u201cgreatest gymnasts\u201d of her time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI apologize to her, and wish her well,\u201d Reitz\u2019s statement continued, adding that his previous critique did not represent the views of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.<\/p>\n

Reitz\u2019s mea culpa came hours after Paxton tweeted that he learned of a \u201cvery inappropriate tweet\u201d by one of his employees, saying ther matter would be handled internally.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know Simone Biles \u2013 she is a fantastic athlete but an even better person,\u201d Paxton tweeted of his fellow Texan<\/a>. \u201cMental health is far more important than any athletic competition and I fully support her decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some praised Reitz for his apology, while others done the damage was already done.<\/p>\n

Biles was in the stands late Thursday in Tokyo during the women\u2019s gymnastics all-around final, cheering on her teammates after winning the event in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The face of Team USA shocked the sports world two days earlier with her withdrawal from the team competition due to the mental toll of the lofty expectations she faced.<\/p>\n

Biles tweeted<\/a> a message to her 1.5 million followers late Wednesday, saying the \u201coutpouring\u201d of love and support she\u2019s received since her contentious decision made her realize she\u2019s \u201cmore\u201d than her accomplishments in gymnastics, \u201cwhich I never truly believed before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biles had told reporters there was \u201cmore to life than just gymnastics\u201d after Team USA won the silver medal in the women\u2019s team competition in her absence.<\/p>\n

\u201dThis medal is all of them and the coaches and nothing to do with me,\u201d Biles added. \u201cI tried to go out there for the team, and they stepped up to the plate.\u201d<\/p>\n
