MOSCOW, July 29 \u2013 Russia upgraded its capabilities on the International\u00a0Space\u00a0Station on Thursday after its\u00a0new\u00a0Nauka\u00a0module, set to serve as a research lab, storage unit and airlock, successfully docked with it after a nervy journey from Earth.<\/p>\n

A live broadcast from\u00a0Russia\u2019s\u00a0space\u00a0agency, Roscosmos, showed the\u00a0module, a multipurpose laboratory named after the Russian word for \u2018science<\/a>\u2019, docking with the\u00a0ISS\u00a0at 9:29 am EST, a few minutes later than scheduled.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to telemetry data and reports from the\u00a0ISS\u00a0crew, the onboard systems of the station and the\u00a0Nauka\u00a0module\u00a0are operating normally,\u201d Roscosmos said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is contact!!!\u201d Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Roscosmos, wrote on Twitter<\/a> moments after the docking.<\/p>\n

Since it launched last week from Kazakhstan\u2019s Baikonur Cosmodrome, the\u00a0module\u00a0had suffered a series<\/a> of glitches that had raised concerns about whether the docking procedure would go smoothly.<\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s development suggests Russia is interested in maintaining the\u00a0ISS\u00a0despite previous comments from Rogozin who last month suggested Moscow would withdraw from it in 2025 unless Washington lifted sanctions on the\u00a0space\u00a0sector that he said were hampering Russian satellite launches.<\/p>\n

Launched in 1998, the\u00a0ISS\u00a0is a multinational project and comprises two segments, a Russian one and another one used by the United States and other\u00a0space\u00a0agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter its commissioning, the Russian segment will receive additional room for arranging workplaces, storing cargo and housing water and oxygen regeneration equipment,\u201d Roscosmos said its statement.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
