Google is banning \u201csugar daddy\u201d apps from its app store, the company said Wednesday, in a move that brings the Android phone maker in line with competitor Apple.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The change will take effect Sept. 1, according to Google.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re updating the\u00a0inappropriate content policy\u00a0to institute\u00a0new restrictions on sexual content, specifically prohibiting compensated sexual relationships,\u201d Google said in a notice to developers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s Play Store already bans \u201cservices that may be interpreted as providing sexual acts in exchange for compensation\u201d \u2014 but the updated rules are more pointed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Google\u2019s new wording<\/a>, the company will prohibit \u201capps that promote sex-related entertainment, escort services or other services that may be interpreted as providing sexual acts in exchange for compensation,\u00a0including, but not limited to compensated dating or sexual arrangements where one participant is expected or implied\u00a0to provide money, gifts or financial support to another participant (\u2018sugar dating\u2019).\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Google did not explain the timing of its decision in its notice and did not immedia<\/a>tely reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

The Google Play Store currently offers apps like SeekingArrangement, Sugar Daddy Meet and Sugar Daddy Dating that promise to connect wealthy people with younger or more attractive partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Similar apps have already been banned from Apple\u2019s App Store, which prohibits \u201c\u2018hookup\u2019 apps that may include pornography or be used to facilitate prostitution,\u201d according to the company\u2019s developer guidelines<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

SeekingArrangement\u2019s app has been unavailable on Apple\u2019s App Store since 2018 but remains available for Android users. The company did not immediately reply to a request for comment on how Google\u2019s change will affect its business.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s decision may be due to the 2018 FOSTA bill signed by President Donald Trump, which removed Section 230 legal protections for companies that are accused of knowingly supporting sex trafficking. The controversial bill prompted Craigslist to remove its \u201cpersonals\u201d section.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
