Officials from Mayor De Blasio\u2019s administration created the idea to incentivize COVID-19 vaccines by offering people $100 to get the shot \u2014 a day before President Biden went national with the plan. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur public health team is in nearly constant contact with the national public health team,\u201d Bill Neidhardt, Mayor de Blasio\u2019s press secretary, told The Post. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to speak to specific conversations,\u201d Neidhardt added, when asked if Biden\u2019s team reached out to City Hall about the mayor\u2019s announcement on the $100 prizes Wednesday. <\/p>\n

But a city official said the mayor\u2019s team hatched the idea before the president. <\/p>\n

On Thursday the Treasury Department said Biden wants state and local governments to consider funding $100 payments through $350 billion in federal relief funds included in\u00a0Biden\u2019s $1.9 trillion relief bill\u00a0that passed in March.<\/p>\n

Before the announcement de Blasio said during his daily press briefing that he\u2019s prepared to spend at least $20 million for the program. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I would be thrilled to see is hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to come forward quickly to get this incentive,\u201d de Blasio said. <\/p>\n

Almost 60 percent of the city\u2019s population of 8.4 million people have gotten at least one shot. <\/p>\n

De Blasio said there\u2019s plenty of money in the city\u2019s nearly $100 billion budget set aside for vaccination efforts to fund the giveaways.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
