Vaccines are only the first step in stopping new coronavirus strains, a new study warns, adding that face masks and social<\/a> distancing are also essential.<\/p>\n

Researchers whose work was published Friday in Nature Scientific Reports<\/a> have said they agree with updated guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which advises Americans to wear masks indoors and in crowded spaces \u2014 even if they are vaccinated against COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Their study also urges non-vaccinated people to get the jab as quickly as possible. \u201cA fast rate of vaccination decreases the probability of emergence of a resistant strain,\u201d they wrote in their report, which used mathematical modeling and epidemiological understanding to make their ominous prediction.<\/p>\n

\u201cCounterintuitively, when a relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions\u201d \u2014 such as face masks and social distancing \u2014 \u201chapp<\/a>ened at a time when most individuals of the population have already been vaccinated, the probability of emergence of a resistant strain was greatly increased,\u201d they continued.<\/p>\n

The findings support a new assessment by the CDC \u2014 via a leaked internal document \u2014 that the coronavirus Delta variant is just as virulent as chickenpox<\/a>, even among some vaccinated individuals.<\/p>\n

According to those reporting on the CDC\u2019s leaked memo, scientists agree that vaccines \u201cprevent more than 90 per cent of severe disease,\u201d the document said, \u201cbut may be less effective at preventing infection or transmission.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simon Rella, a researcher at the\u00a0Institute of Science<\/a> and Technology<\/a> Austria who worked on the study, told reporters that a vaccine-resistant strain has an \u201cadvantage over the original strain\u201d when vaccinated people let their guard down.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis means the vaccine resistant strain spreads through the population faster at a time when most people are vaccinated,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Institute\u2019s Fyodor Kondrashov also explained how vaccine-resistant strains become more virulent than their predecessor.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeneral<\/a>ly, the more people are infected, the more the chances for vaccine resistance to emerge. So the more Delta is infectious, the more reason for concern,\u201d he said<\/p>\n

The study suggests that lawmakers should not lift all pandemic restrictions just yet. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have two tools in our toolbox to do this,\u201d Kondrashov continued, referring to vaccines and face masks. \u201cFrom an evolutionary perspective, what is necessary to reduce [the spread] is to vaccinate as many people as possible as fast as possible and across the globe.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
