The EU has fined Amazon a record \u20ac746 million ($887m) for GDPR violations related to ad targetting.<\/p>\n

The decision stems from a 2018 complaint<\/a> by\u00a0French privacy rights group La Quadrature du Net, which alleged that Amazon\u2019s ad targetting doesn\u2019t obtain free consent from users.<\/p>\n

The ruling, which was issued by Luxembourg\u2019s data protection authority (CNPD) on July 16, was disclosed by Amazon in a regulatory filing<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n

The CNPD oversees Amazon\u2019s operations in Europe because the company\u2019s EU headquarters are based in\u00a0Luxembourg.<\/p>\n

The watchdog said that \u201cAmazon\u2019s processing of personal data did not comply with the EU General<\/a> Data Protection Regulation. The authority is also asking for undisclosed \u201cpractice revisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Amazon said it plans to app<\/a>eal the decision:<\/p>\n

There has been no data breach, and no customer data has been exposed to any third party. These facts are undisputed.<\/p>\n

We strongly disagree with the CNPD\u2019s ruling, and we intend to appeal. The decision relating to how we show customers relevant advertising relies on subjective and untested interpretations of European privacy law, and the proposed fine is entirely out of proportion with even that interpretation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The penalty would be the largest ever imposed for a GDPR breach. The previous record of\u00a0$118.82m ($100m) was dished out to Google last year for violating rules on ad trackers.<\/p>\n

The eye-popping sum still wouldn\u2019t be a huge\u00a0dent in the coffers of Amazon. The e-commerce giant just posted its third $100 billion quarter in a row<\/a>.<\/p>\n
