Not long after, however, the flight control team noticed the module\u2019s thrusters were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2021\/07\/russian-module-suddenly-fires-thrusters-after-docking-with-space-station\/\">unexpectedly firing<\/a>, temporarily pushing the station out of orientation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Russian cosmonauts were preparing to open the hatches that would connect the Nauka to the ISS, the ship\u2019s movement thrusters started firing and the space station began losing attitude control. Obviously, that was problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The ISS needs to maintain a certain attitude in order to keep its signal with geostationary satellites and continue communicating with Mission Control. The station\u2019s positioning needs to stay the same so that its solar arrays can optimally collect power. Its structure was also in jeopardy, as it was assembled in microgravity and designed to work in zero gravity. If its position was shifted too much, stress from G forces could cause cracks or other structural issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93683 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/07\/d83bd315.jpg\" alt=\"ISS in orbit over Earth\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" data-crediturl=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/international-space-station-on-orbit-earth-1425668150\" data-credittext=\"Dima Zel\/Shutterstock.com\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/international-space-station-on-orbit-earth-1425668150\">Dima Zel\/Shutterstock.com<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Since then, however, ground teams were quickly able to right the station and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/spacestation\/2021\/07\/29\/space-station-stable-after-earlier-unplanned-mlm-thruster-firing\/\">regain attitude control<\/a>. No information was released regarding the seriousness of the situation. By Thursday afternoon, NASA officials held a briefing teleconference. Joel Montalbano, NASA\u2019s space station program manager, said, \u201cUntil you exhaust all your contingency plans, you\u2019re not really starting to worry. And we didn\u2019t do that today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfortunately, the event caused a delay for Friday\u2019s scheduled launch of a Starliner spacecraft, which had already dealt with a previous delay in December of 2019 caused by software problems. Boeing has agreed to a second test mission of Starliner, which NASA moved to no earlier than Tuesday, August 3, at 1:20pm EDT from Florida. If that goes according to plan, we can expect to see Starliner dock with the ISS on Wednesday, August 4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the meantime, Russian cosmonauts are continuing to work on integrating its large Nauka ship with the ISS. It features crew quarters and an airlock for scientific experiments.
