Looking for the most ideal setting to experience Armageddon? Scientists recommend New Zealand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a study<\/a> published this month in the journal Sustainability, a pair of researchers have found evidence that a variety of factors make New Zealand the best country to be in when doomsday arrives.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuman civilization has undergone a continuous trajectory of rising sociopolitical complexity since its inception,\u201d begins the study, before noting that global \u201ccollapse\u201d is increasingly likely due to such \u201cEarth System\u201d problems as climate change. When, say, a nuclear holocaust does arrive, the day of reckoning may be more gently felt in certain countries that have \u201cfavorable starting conditions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of the authors\u2019 \u201cshortlist of nations\u201d with the \u201cgreatest potential\u201d for a relatively more pleasant apocalypse experience, New Zealand topped the list, which also included Iceland, the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t surprised New Zealand was on our list,\u201d said Aled Jones, a study author and professor at the UK\u2019s Anglia Ruskin University, The New Zealand Herald <\/a>reported. \u201cWe chose that you had to be able to protect borders and places had to be temperate. So with hindsight it\u2019s quite obvious that large islands with complex societies on them already [make up the list].\u201d<\/p>\n

That Kiwis have the most prime geography for humanity\u2019s eventual annihilation doesn\u2019t come as a shock to the mega-rich, either: Apocalypse-fearing billionaires have been shipping bunkers to the southwestern Pacific island for years. During the coronavirus pandemic, it also became a favorite quarantine destination among the Silicon Valley elite.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The fact that Jones\u2019 own nation made the list, however, was less expected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were quite surprised the UK came out strongly. It is densely populated, has traditionally outsourced manufacturing, hasn\u2019t been the quickest to develop renewable technology<\/a>, and only produces 50 percent of its own food,\u201d Jones told the publication. \u201cBut it has the potential to withstand shocks.\u201d<\/p>\n
