President Biden on Friday vowed to heap new sanctions on Cuba\u2019s Communist leaders unless there\u2019s \u201cdrastic change\u201d in the wake of large anti-government protests.<\/p>\n

Biden made the threat as he hosted a group of Cuban-Americans at the White House \u2014 following weeks of noisy protests on Pennsylvania Ave, including a large and loud overnight protest into the wee hours of Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be more [sanctions] unless there\u2019s some drastic change in Cuba, which I don\u2019t anticipate,\u201d Biden told reporters at the Friday event.<\/p>\n

Biden said that Cuba\u2019s repression of protests was \u201cintolerable\u201d and said that new sanctions are likely to target police on the island.<\/p>\n

But the broadcast of Biden\u2019s message was limited. The White House did not set up a live video feed for the Friday afternoon event and did not immedia<\/a>tely provide reporters with a list of Cuban-Americans who participated.<\/p>\n

Biden last week\u00a0authorized sanctions against Cuban Defense Minister Alvaro Lopez Miera and the Cuban Interior Ministry\u2019s special forces brigade, nicknamed the \u201cBlack Berets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former President Donald Trump imposed sanctions against the entire Cuban Interior Ministry, including the brigade, in January, the Treasury Department said. It does not app<\/a>ear that those sanctions were lifted by Biden.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear why Biden did not order sanctions against Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel,\u00a0who called the protesters<\/a>\u00a0\u201ccounter-revolutionary mercenaries\u201d and oversaw this month\u2019s crackdown.<\/p>\n

Critics have called on the commander-in-chief to do more amid the suppression of protests \u2014 and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)\u00a0told The Post\u00a0last week that Republicans are weighing legislation to force the president\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

Biden previously said the US is investigating whether it\u2019s possible to override an internet blackout imposed by Cuban authorities. The lack of internet access prevents distribution of information on protests.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
